Mayor Greenberg and Louisville Zoo announce new Amur tiger, Viktoria

Press Release - Louisville Zoo

Mayor Greenberg and the Louisville Zoo are thrilled to announce the arrival of a new female Amur tiger to Louisville.

Viktoria, a 3-year-old tiger, comes to Louisville from Rolling Hills Zoo in Kansas. She has completed her standard quarantine and acclimation period and is now on rotation at Tiger Taiga, located near Snow Leopard Pass.

“Earlier this month, the Zoo and I announced two new Sumatran orangutans joining the Zoo family, and I’m delighted our Zoo family is growing even more,” said Mayor Greenberg. “Connecting families with the precious animals that call our planet home is important, and our Zoo is truly a living classroom. I hope people will come out this winter to meet these important ambassadors for their species.”

Viktoria comes with a future breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Amur Tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP) with male Amur tiger Timmy. The SSP aims to maintain genetic diversity in managed animal populations under human care and contributes to the conservation of this endangered species.

“Winter is the season for Amurs! Built for the cold climate of Russia, they look mesmerizing playing in the snow,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “This season presents the perfect opportunity to visit the Zoo and see Viktoria, along with our two new Sumatran orangutans announced earlier this month. Kroger’s Wild Winter Days continues now through the end of February — guests can bring a canned food item for Dare to Care and receive an additional discount.”

About Amur Tigers

Amur Tigers (formerly called Siberian tigers) are no longer found in Siberia. They are currently found in the Amur River region of eastern Russia, northeastern China and into the Korean peninsula. They are the largest living feline. Males weigh 400 – 600 pounds on average and measure up to 14 feet long. Average females weigh between 250 – 300. Tiger stripes are like fingerprints and are unique to that tiger.
