Chrys the maned wolf joins Louisville Zoo family

Press Release

ree

Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Zoo are excited to welcome Chrys, a male maned wolf, to the Zoo family. Chrys joins us from Wichita, Kansas, and will celebrate his 8th birthday on November 27.

“We are excited to welcome Chrys to his new home at the Louisville Zoo,” said Mayor Greenberg. “The return of maned wolves to the zoo‘s habitat is a wonderful addition, and we invite everyone to come see him and learn more about these unique animals.”

In the wild, maned wolves are generally solitary creatures, and Chrys is currently exploring the maned wolf habitat on his own. However, the Zoo has received a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and plans to introduce a female maned wolf to join Chrys soon.

Chrys, a curious yet cautious maned wolf, is known for his intelligence. Zookeepers observe that he enjoys his puzzle feeder enrichment, and, like most canids, he loves playing with a ball.

About Maned Wolf

The maned wolf is native to South America and can be found throughout Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Uruguay. Though generally solitary, they form semi-monogamous pairs during the breeding season. Maned wolves are omnivores with half of their diet consisting of fruit, supplemented by small mammals, birds and reptiles, insects, nuts, eggs and grass. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the maned wolf as near threatened.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Now through March 20, 2026, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.
