Artistic Director Anthony Krutzkamp’s First Original Work Since Joining the Company at the Brown Theatre Oct. 30–31

Louisville Ballet will present the world premiere of "Frankenstein" at the Brown Theatre on Oct. 30 and 31. The all-new production marks the first original work choreographed by Artistic Director Anthony Krutzkamp since assuming leadership of the company in 2025.

Inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 gothic novel, "Frankenstein" follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist consumed by the obsession to conquer death. When his creation comes to life, Victor recoils in horror from the creature, abandoning it to a world that responds with fear and violence. Driven by betrayal and isolation, the Creature seeks vengeance against its maker, culminating in a dramatic confrontation between creator and creation.

Rather than a conventional retelling, Krutzkamp’s choreography explores the profound human questions at the core of Shelley’s work: What does it mean to create? What responsibility does a creator hold for what they bring into the world? And what happens when the desire to achieve something extraordinary comes at the expense of humanity?

"Mary Shelley’s story is often remembered for its horror elements, but at its heart, 'Frankenstein' is a deeply emotional exploration of creation, abandonment, and consequence," Krutzkamp said. "In choreographing this world premiere, I wanted to strip away the pop-culture tropes and focus on the vulnerability of both Victor and the Creature. It asks the audience to look closer and consider who the real monster actually is."

The production is a comprehensive artistic overhaul for Louisville Ballet, featuring brand-new set designs, custom costumes, atmospheric lighting, and new company dancers making their mainstage debuts. The performance is set to a score featuring music by acclaimed composer John Adams, curated and compiled specifically for this narrative by Louisville Ballet Music Manager Justin Gray in close consultation with Krutzkamp.

"Curating a ballet score from the existing catalog of an iconic composer like John Adams is both an immense privilege and an intricate puzzle," Gray said. "Collaborating closely with Anthony allowed us to align the musical architecture with his choreographic storytelling from day one, shaping a soundscape that feels tailor-made for this production."

The ambitious production is one of three world premieres featured in Louisville Ballet’s 2026–2027 season, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing original choreography and contemporary ballet repertory. "Frankenstein" also marks the mainstage debut for a roster of new company artists who joined Louisville Ballet this season, bringing fresh artistic energy to the ensemble alongside seasoned company veterans.

"This production represents an exciting new chapter for Louisville Ballet as we bring a fully original, multidisciplinary work to life," Krutzkamp said. "From John Adams' evocative music to the custom visual elements and the fresh energy of our new company dancers, every layer of this production was crafted to deliver an unforgettable theatrical experience for Halloween weekend."
