Press Release

Formed in Louisville in 1998, My Morning Jacket (MMJ), the multiple GRAMMY-nominated band was honored with an official Hometown Heroes banner at a dedication ceremony on April 24th. “My Morning Jacket’s Louisville” is located on the north-facing wall of the Kentucky Expo Center Armory building at 937 Phillips Lane. MMJ was selected to receive a Hometown Heroes banner as part of the original program before it was temporarily suspended in 2017. “We are thrilled to officially recognize this great Louisville band with this
long overdue honor, said Mike Sheehy, president and founding member of the Greater
Louisville Pride Foundation (GLPF). “My Morning Jacket has carried Louisville’s name to stages around the world, and now their Hometown Heroes banner proudly greets millions of guests at the Kentucky Exposition Center. It’s a fitting tribute to local talent and a reminder that Kentucky is home to world-class artistry," said David S. Beck, President & CEO of Kentucky Venues.
“Recognized with the Governor’s Award in 2014, the band is known around the globe
and have remained steadfast ambassadors for Louisville and the state of Kentucky,” Sheehy
added. MMJ has supported a number of local non-profit organizations including Young Authors Greenhouse, Apron Inc., Kentuckians for the Commonwealth and CASA of the River Region. The banner is sponsored by the Danny Wimmer Foundation and Metro Council.
For more than 25 years, MMJ has achieved an incredibly rare feat in the world of rock
and roll, upholding a long-established cultural legacy while sustaining all the curiosity and
creative hunger of their very earliest days. The Louisville-bred five-piece band members are
vocalist/guitarist and frontman Jim James, bassist Tom Blankenship, guitarist Carl Broemel,
drummer Patrick Hallahan, and keyboardist Bo Koster. MMJ’s just-released 10th studio album finds the band deviating from their typically self-produced approach and teaming up with multi-GRAMMY® Award-winner Brendan O’Brien -- one of the most esteemed producers in rock music, known for his extensive work with Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam. Arriving as My Morning Jacket celebrates the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Z -- a lavishly acclaimed LP that landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time -- IS once again expands the limits of their sound and elevates their artistry to unprecedented heights. The result: the most masterfully realized work yet from a band fully committed to their belief in music as a conduit for revelation of all kinds.
About My Morning Jacket
For more than 25 years, My Morning Jacket has fully committed to their belief in music as a conduit for revelation of all kinds. Hailed by The New York Times as “the kings of expand your-mind, religious-experience rock,” the Louisville, KY-bred five-piece has undergone seismic transformations and restless explorations to grow from southern misfits to one of the most acclaimed and beloved bands of their generation. My Morning Jacket has released nine studio albums thus far, with 2005’s Z named by Rolling Stone among “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and 2008’s Evil Urges, 2011’s Circuital, and 2015’s The Waterfall receiving three consecutive GRAMMY® Award nominations for “Best Alternative Album.” 2020’s hit single, “Feel You” marked a milestone in the band’s history by ascending to #1 at Triple A radio outlets nationwide and on Billboard’s “Adult Alternative Songs” chart – My Morning Jacket’s first-ever #1 on a Billboard songs chart. Along the way, the band have earned a reputation as a dynamic, life-altering live experience, building a devout worldwide fanbase through sold-out headline tours and top-billed festival sets. My Morning Jacket’s latest release, 2025’s IS, sees them once again elevating their artistry to unprecedented heights by teaming with one of the most esteemed producers in rock music, multiple GRAMMY® Award-winner Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam). The decision to involve an outside creative force for the first time in their career led to what may be My Morning Jacket’s most masterfully realized collection thus far, simultaneously expanding the parameters of the band’s already far-reaching sound while also breathing fresh new energy into their continually evolving body of work.
About Hometown Heroes 2.0
On its 20th anniversary in June of 2022, GLPF relaunched the popular banner program
with Hometown Heroes 2.0. The first phase of GLPF’s Hometown Heroes 2.0 is to refresh the
original banner program by reprinting and re-installing, as needed, Louisville’s most iconic
banners. In addition, some current faded banners are being retired, freeing up a building wall
for a new Hometown Heroes 2.0 honoree. According to Sheehy, “Anyone who has earned the
distinction of being named an official “Hometown Hero” will forever be part of the program.
Some banners may be retired to make room for another, but the heroes we honor will always
be part of any new and creative future expression of the program.” In the future, the program
hopes to create an “Avenue of Heroes” that recognizes all official Hometown Heroes.
