When I set out to write this story, I had this fantastical idea of interviewing every business owner and resident on Barret Avenue. I wanted to truly capture the spirit of the neighborhood and give everyone the opportunity to share their perspectives through this article.
I say “fantastical” because, if you’re at all familiar with Barret Avenue, then you know just how massive an undertaking that would be.
Barret Avenue is home to dozens of businesses, and within them, the work of hundreds of local and regional artists, craftspeople, tradesmen, writers, photographers, antique lovers, and vintage aficionados. I know I’m not unique in holding the belief that it is one of the last places in this city that still has that old spirit and sense of community of the original Highlands, in true “Keep Louisville Weird” fashion.
And here’s the thing: I can try to express that within the limits of word and page counts, but I know I’d fall short. I was grappling with how to approach this when I received these photographs Matt Johnson captured of the area, and it became very clear to me that Barret Avenue does not need me to lend it my voice. It speaks for itself.
I hope our readers enjoy flipping through these photos as much as I have, and I hope they feel inspired to spend a lazy afternoon among some truly genuine people, working their way through all the treasures waiting to be found on Barret Avenue.
