A Milestone Season for Louisville Ballet

By VOICE-TRIBUNE • Photos By Louisville Ballet

Louisville Ballet is entering a major period of growth, transition, and expansion heading into its 75th anniversary 2026–2027 season. Across education, leadership, facilities, partnerships, and new programming, the organization is advancing multiple initiatives at once while preparing for a milestone year that blends new work, classical storytelling, and community engagement across Kentucky and beyond.

One of the key access initiatives, Ballet Bound, launched its audition tour beginning June 6 and ran through June 21, 2026. Developed in partnership with Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the program held community auditions at multiple Louisville parks and at the Louisville Ballet studios downtown. Designed for children ages 7 to 9, it was created to reduce financial and geographic barriers to early classical ballet training.

Approximately 20 children were selected for a tuition-free, year-long training program during the 2026–2027 season. Participants receive classical ballet instruction, dance attire, access to professional teaching artists, and performance opportunities. At the end of the program, up to five students may receive full scholarships to continue training at The Louisville Ballet School through high school, while additional participants may be offered tuition assistance to support continued study.

Leadership changes have also marked a major transition period for the organization. CEO Leslie Smart stepped down after approximately 3.5 years in the role and transitioned to the Board of Directors, where she will co-chair the 75th Diamond Anniversary celebration. During her tenure, the organization secured more than $18.5 million in philanthropic support. That period also saw record ticket sales, multiple sold-out performances, and expanded programming reach across Kentucky and Indiana, along with increased engagement in both performance and education initiatives.

Her leadership included several long-term institutional developments. These included the launch of a joint arts administration degree program with Bellarmine University and collaborations with Norton Healthcare focused on medical and dance therapy initiatives. The organization also developed a Holocaust-themed production that expanded into educational programming and documentary work. A national search for a new executive director has been underway, while senior leadership and the board have continued managing day-to-day operations during the transition.

Louisville Ballet has advanced a $9 million public-private investment initiative aimed at strengthening infrastructure and expanding artistic programming. The funding includes $3 million from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, $3 million in private lead support, and $3 million in donor matching commitments. The investment is directed toward facility upgrades at the Ballet’s studios and school, including building repairs, HVAC replacement, roof work, new studio flooring, and improvements to dancer training and wellness spaces.

This initiative has also supported expanded statewide touring and the return of live music collaborations in performances. These efforts are intended to enhance artistic quality and audience experience while reinforcing the Ballet’s cultural presence across Kentucky. The investment aligns with broader organizational development efforts, including expanded education programming and planning for the upcoming anniversary season.

Educational outreach continues through a documentary project titled Illumination: Art, Education & Truth, which is scheduled for release on Kentucky Educational Television later in 2026. The film is based on Louisville Ballet’s production Light: A Humanity and Holocaust Project and explores the creation and impact of that work, focusing on remembrance and education through the arts. An accompanying study guide has been developed for middle and high school classrooms to extend the project’s educational reach. The documentary is planned for a public television release in the fall, followed by a private screening.

Academic programming has expanded as well through a new Bachelor of Arts in Arts Administration: Dance, created in partnership with Bellarmine University. The program is designed for dancers in Louisville Ballet’s Studio Company and professional ranks, allowing them to continue full-time training and performance schedules while completing a college degree. Coursework is delivered online through Bellarmine alongside hands-on professional experience at the Ballet. The curriculum focuses on arts leadership, including marketing, fundraising, policy, and management, and includes internships with Louisville Ballet and other arts organizations. The inaugural cohort is scheduled to begin in August 2026.

Looking ahead, the 2026–2027 season will mark Louisville Ballet’s 75th anniversary and will feature a wide-ranging lineup that combines classical storytelling, contemporary choreography, and seasonal tradition. The season opens with Hamlet & Ophelia in August 2026, performed outdoors as part of the Shakespeare festival, followed by Frankenstein in October 2026, a gothic production staged for Halloween. The holiday season includes The Brown-Forman Nutcracker in December 2026, performed with the Louisville Orchestra. In February 2027, the company will present Carmen, a reimagined modern staging of the classic work. The season concludes in March 2027 with Bourbon & Ballet: A Choreographers’ Showcase, highlighting new and contemporary choreographic voices.

Together, the season reflects a balance of large-scale narrative works, seasonal tradition, and new choreography, anchored by the milestone anniversary and continued artistic expansion.

Louisville Ballet will be joining us to participate in the VOICE-TRIBUNE’s Best Dressed Kentucky 2026 event, where dancers will perform and model. Proceeds from the event will support Louisville Ballet during this monumental season.

Taken together, these developments position Louisville Ballet in a sustained phase of expansion and preparation. The organization is building on initiatives already launched, continuing facility improvements, advancing education and partnership programs, and preparing for a 75th anniversary season that reflects both its history and its evolving artistic direction.
