June 19, 2024

The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage hosted the installation ceremony of a bronze sculptural bust of Elmer Lucille Allen, created by sculptor Terri Gilmore. A trailblazer and revered Louisvillian, Elmer Lucille Allen was the first African American woman scientist hired by Brown-Forman as a chemist. Elmer Lucille is also known for her incredible works of art, so it was very fitting that she was surprised at the ceremony with a new gallery named for her housed in the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. In tribute to Elmer Lucille Allen, the Juneteenth Art Showcase hosted the closing reception of the 2024 Celebrating the Black Experience Exhibition, along with a special exhibition featuring works of art created by studio artists from the Samuel Plato Industrial and Creative Arts Institute at KCAAH.
