The preseason No. 2-ranked Louisville Cardinals defeated the Bellarmine Knights 65-46 in an exhibition game held at the KFC Yum! Center on Nov. 7.
Freshman Montrezl Harrell score 16 points for the Cards, who had trouble with shooting throughout the night, finishing 1 of 19 from behind the arc. Luke Hancock made Louisville’s only 3-point shot, with 4:06 left to play.
UofL’s Gorgui Dieng tacked on 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Cardinals while Russ Smith had 11 points.
Chris Dowe led Bellarmine with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Knights have dominated the NCAA Division II field, advancing to the national semifinals last season after winning the national championship in 2011.
The UofL-Bellarmine match-up was a reunion game for Bellarmine Head Coach Scott Davenport, past UofL assistant coach under Pitino, and former Cardinals star Reece Gaines, a first-year Bellarmine assistant. Davenport’s son, Doug, is also Louisville’s director of video operations and played four years under his father at Bellarmine.
On Nov. 11, Pitino will face another former assistant, Steve Masiello, during the Cards’ regular season opening game against Manhattan. Bellarmine will next face Wayne State University on Nov. 15 at Knights Hall.
