Unthinkable Upset Capped By Cards

Just after Louisville’s men defeated Duke 85-63 Sunday to advance in the NCAA Tournament, this question had to be asked:

Can anything get any better for any Cardinal team?

It didn’t take long for that question to be answered when the women’s team toppled No. 1 Baylor 82-81.

Coach Jeff Walz’s Cardinals staged one of the biggest upsets in the history of women’s basketball. The Baylor All-American, Brittney Griner, all 6-feet, 8-inches of her, was held to 14 points.

Louisville’s Monique Reid, fouled by Griner with two seconds left, made two free throws to clinch the victory for the Cardinals.

Louisville was scheduled to play Tennessee Tuesday in the regional final for a berth in the Final Four after this issue of The Voice-Tribune went to press.
