Red Reign Overtaken By Orangemen

| January 21, 2013

No. 1 University of Louisville fell to 6th-ranked Syracuse 70-68 on Jan. 19.

A record crowd of 22,814 watched with nail-biting intensity as senior guard Peyton Siva made a poor cross-court pass that was intercepted by Syracuse’s Michael Carter-Williams with 26 seconds left. The Cardinals had one last chance to win or tie the game on their final possession, but another dish from Siva to center Gorgui Dieng was stripped by Syracuse, sealing Louisville’s fate.

After taking a 68-66 lead with 1:58 remaining, Louisville missed two shots and committed two turnovers. Siva finished with three points, going 1 of 9 from the field. Junior guard Russ Smith led Louisville with 25 points, while Chane Behanan finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Carter-Williams and senior Brandon Triche caused plenty of trouble for Louisville, scoring 16 and 23 points, respectively, for Syracuse.

Prior to Saturday’s loss, Louisville held an 11-game winning streak. The Cards next head to Villanova on Jan. 22.
