Churchill Wants Third Meet In ‘13

| October 4, 2012

Another season of racing for Churchill Downs?

Could be.

Now it’s spring, featuring the Kentucky Derby, and fall. The South End track has requested a third meet, which would come at the expense of beleaguered Turfway Park at Florence in Northern Kentucky.

Kentucky’s Horse Racing Commission must award meet dates by Nov. 1 for Churchill, Keeneland, Ellis Park in Henderson, Turfway and Kentucky Downs in Franklin.

While Turfway battles winter weather and soon-to-be competition from a casino that is being built across the Ohio River in nearby Cincinnati, Kentucky Downs is booming from revenue from slot-like Instant Racing machines.

Churchill officials said that should there be conflicts between nearby University of Louisville football games. The track could run at night since the Derby track now has lights.
