Beg, Borrow Or Steal For UofL – UK Football Tickets

Quick, Tom Jurich! Line up all of the big contractors in the bi-state area and start adding at least 25,000 seats before next football season starts. Or else rent UK’s Commonwealth Stadium and save 70,000 of the tickets for University of Louisville fans.

That way more Cardinal fans will get to see the game than they could even if the game is played in Louisville.

Okay! Okay! I’ve been asked these two questions repeatedly:

  1. Will Teddy Bridgewater return for his junior season?
  2. Is Bridgewater the best quarterback in the history of Cardinal football?

Answer to question No. 1: Yes, I would think that he most certainly will be back for his junior season. After that, and if he stays healthy, he probably will enter his name in the NFL draft after his third season in Louisville. The money will be too big to risk another season in college football.

Answer to question No. 2: With another outstanding year, he can be the best-ever quarterback – WHILE – at UofL.

But neither Bridgewater nor anyone else likely will ever be the equal of his entire career of Johnny Unitas, the premier NFL quarterback of all time.

You couldn’t get the late Unitas to say that, but it is true.

Once when I interviewed  him for my TV show, I asked him who was the greatest passer he ever saw. I didn’t expect him to say that he was, but I tried to give him the opportunity.

But he answered, “Dan Fouts,” the QB who shared the San Diego starting job with Johnny U during Unitas’ final season in the NFL.

Another question: Was the thrashing of Florida in the Sugar Bowl the biggest victory in Cardinal history? When Howard Schnellenberger’s Cards defeated Alabama 34-7 in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, that was regarded as the biggest achievement  ever  for the Cards, the one that would get Louisville over the hump and into the highest ranks of college football. But it didn’t work out.

Now the Cards are on the cusp of something biggest of all in the football history of the university.

Cardinals’ future?

DeVante Parker is the finest ball-catcher in the history of Cardinal football. He played for Ballard against Trinity and the powerful Shamrocks still extol his superb catches. He is the one local player they could not stop.

Now Parker’s partnership with Bridgewater is paying tremendous dividends. It’s a joy to watch him soar high and stretch out for an over-the-head touchdown  catch.

And we probably haven’t seen anything yet! Next season Parker will be joined by Trinity’s game-breaking James Quick, who soars over defensive players. When he comes down, he has the speed to outrun defenders. He is a state sprint champion and, like Parker, stars in basketball. He was a starter on Trinity’s state championship basketball team.

Stay Away!

How long will Charlie Strong stay with the Cards?

I can’t see Florida staying with its coach and the Gators will come calling for their long-time defensive coordinator to come back to the Sunshine state. The NFL also will be lurking.
