Carol Bader first fell in love with horse racing when she watched Secretariat run as a little girl.

Today, she’s best known for creating hats and fascinators that marry her equine passion with designs sought by women all over the world.

The Del Mar Hat Co. owner is thrilled to see events like The Voice-Tribune’s Fascinator & Fedora contest. “I’m so behind the Breeders’ Cup. Other people create the event – we just have to dress it.”

So what’s in for fall? The fashionista says wine, plum, eggplant, and cobalt hues are popular, in addition to “very strong reds. And houndstooth pattern, teals, turquoises. But I’m making a lot of red.”

Regardless of the color or style you choose to don, Bader suggests making sure it feels “organic … and inherent. In a way, there’s a little bit of drama to either (a fascinator or fedora). It is a little bit of costuming in a way,” she said. “But I think what ever you do, it should come natural to that person.”
