Teeing Off

| March 30, 2011

Valhalla Golf CourseMere days after Louisville plays host to Kentucky Derby 137, the River City will get ready for the return of another internationally-renowned event: the 2011 Senior PGA Championship, presented by KitchenAid.

The 72nd competition is May 24-29 at Valhalla Golf Club, the scene of the 2008 Ryder Cup, the 2004 Senior PGA and the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships.

“It’s a great time in Louisville,” said Ben Rubin, championship director. “There’s so much going on. The community has always showed so much support for many events, I just think the Senior PGA adds to the excitement that is May.”

The field, which is limited to 156 golfers, currently includes competitors representing 25 states and six different countries, including South Africa and Scotland. Fuzzy Zoeller, who lives in Sellersburg, Ind., and Russ Cochran, of Paducah, Ky., have both committed to play, as have Paul Azinger, of Bradenton, Fla., Fred Couples, of La Quinta, Calif., and Tom Watson, of Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Valhalla Golf Course“I always like to say the Senior PGA leaderboard is more recognizable than the PGA leaderboard,” Rubin said of the familiar faces expected to tee off at this year’s championships.

Not exactly a golf aficionado? The event will still be the place to be, Rubin said. There will be plenty of “non-golf” activities, including cooking demonstrations and celebrity chefs. Plus kids 17 and under can get in free with a paid adult ticket, which begin at $40 for a one-day pass. And, added Rubin, Valhalla offers gorgeous scenery and the opportunity to check out the famed course up close.

“I sort of refer to it as being like the paddock at Churchill Downs. You may not see a horse race – you may not see a golf shot if you don’t want to – but it’s a great place to hang out,” Rubin said. “Whether you’re watching golf or not, it will be the place to be in town that week.”
