Yes, a longshot named Animal Kingdom won Kentucky Derby 137, and Plum Pretty looked just that while standing in the winner’s circle after running the Kentucky Oaks.
But we’ll remember so much about this year in addition to the horse races:
The Voice-Tribune’s Brunch with Betsey Johnson Presented by Chambord was a hit that still has attendees bubbling about the program, which honored the fashion designer and six of her fellow breast cancer survivors: Wendy Martin, Mel Fisher, Thomas Buckman, Karen Casi, Bobbie Leslie and Debbie Scoppechio.
Scores of women entered Chambord’s Kentucky Oaks Days Fashion Contest and walked the pink carpet in the Aristides Garden. The fashion was, of course, fabulous, but even better: Chambord donated $10 on behalf of every gal who took part in the competition, which was judged by Johnson and supermodel Niki Taylor (who hasn’t aged in at least a decade).
Fashion varied in scope and style, as it always does, though fascinators certainly made a bigger splash this year, as did vintage dresses and apparel mimicking styles seen in decades past.
Visitors came from all over the world to enjoy our Southern hospitality, our bourbon and our delicious dishes, particularly those that some of the country’s most famous foodies –including Martha Stewart, Bobby Flay, Adam Richman and Guy Fieri – touted.
This year’s crop of celebrities included a lively mix of reality notables, politicians, musicians, comedians, supermodels and TV and movie stars. For the most part, we’ve heard nothing but highlights and wonderful stories about our readers’ run-ins with many of the famous faces.
There were Derby parties held every night of the week – from the famed Barnstable Brown Gala to the exclusive Maxim magazine bash to the Prime Lounge parties to the Julep Ball to the post-Derby, Cuban-themed affair held at 21c.
Then on Sunday, as we celebrated our mothers and said goodbye to our out-of-town visitors, we took a few moments to recount the whirlwind that was this year’s festivities. Though we’re still catching our breath, with this issue, we hope you’ll join us in savoring Kentucky Derby 137.
