JCPS Students Win Filmmaking Competition

| August 30, 2012

Three students from Communications, Media and the Arts (CMA) Five-Star Schools in Jefferson County said hello to Hollywood during a trip Friday, July 13 through Tuesday, July 17, as part of a collaborative partnership aiming to bring filmmaking education to the forefront in Kentucky.

Lakin Pack, Andrew Creek and Cassandra Kelsey won “A Foot In the Door: The Hollywood Experience,” a competition allowing them to travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for an intensive four-day, four-night program designed to provide a hands-on Hollywood film production experience. The program is sponsored by Writer/Director/Producer Matt Berman and organized by The Louisville Film Arts Institute, Inc (LFAII). The competition was open to high school students from Fern Creek Traditional, Ballard and Pleasure Ridge Park. Each student submitted a comprehensive portfolio of work and was interviewed by a panel of judges, which selected the three winners.

The intensive four-day, four-night program provided a “behind the scenes” look at the new Matt Berman feature film, “A Love/Like Ours,” starring Haylie Duff, Chris Soldevilla, Angie Everhart, Leslie Easterbrook and Scott Michael Campbell. Students shadowed various production crew members responsible for all aspects of the film’s development, including the producers, cinematographers and actors. As part of the program, students recorded interviews, which will be used to develop a documentary film about their experience. The documentary film will premiere at Louisville’s International Festival of Film in October.
