Kate Middleton’s adoration for fascinators has sparked interest in the oft-feathered or flowered hair accessories here in the United States. In fact, Google reports searches for the headwear are up 50 percent since January and business owners across the country say sales have soared.
So what is it about the wearable works of art? Is the soon-to-be bride’s fascination with the toppers really enough to ignite a fashion frenzy? Maybe, but designer Maureen Uhlin says falling for the fascinator is really a personal affair.
“When I do my hat shows and I have the hats sitting there, you will have a little old lady come up and say, ‘This is so cute,’ and once they try it on, it’s like ‘oh my gosh,’ and they fall in love,” she said. “I sold (a fascinator) to an 80-year-old woman and let me tell you: she was hot. You just have to give it a try.”
