Students at Walden School are finding that this school year includes an intriguing intergenerational opportunity: The newly opened Westport Place Health Campus, the “senior living alternative” across the street (4247 Westport Road), is inviting pupils to participate in activities with the men and women who live there.

“We see Walden School as a partner,” said Suzanne Rinne, Westport Place’s executive director. “Our activity director will work with their staff to bring the students here. There might be musical or dramatic performances, or they might join our residents in art projects. The students can gain a greater understanding of the importance of treating people with dignity and respect. They’ll see that our residents are still individuals who are vital to our community and our city.”

Walden’s athletic fields are on the western edge of the health campus. Residents look forward to “the happy sounds of children,” Rinne said. “Some have already told us, ‘I want to be on the side where I can see them playing.’ ”

Westport Place is the newest campus owned and operated by Trilogy Health Services, which is based in Louisville. Its 66 facilities are located throughout Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky. The Louisville area is also home to the Franciscan Health Care Center, Glen Ridge Health Campus and Park Terrace Health Campus.

The ground-breaking ceremony for this facility took place about a year ago. The site appealed to Trilogy primarily because the surrounding heavily populated area has experienced little growth in senior services, except for the recent expansion of the Masonic Home.

In mid-June, patients began moving in for short-term rehab, long-term care, skilled nursing, assisted living or memory care services. When full, the campus will house 89 residents.

Even when Walden students aren’t adding their youthful energy to Westport Place activities, the residents have plenty of choices for healthful fun. A putting green and “LifeTrail” outdoor fitness station already are popular features of campus courtyards. Indoors, Wii games are available at the click of a button on large flat-panel television screens – bowling is the most popular Wii game, and Trilogy encourages leagues for patients and staff.

“Everything here focuses on the health and happiness of our residents, within a setting that’s reminiscent of home,” Rinne said. “Residential hallways have names such as Julep Trail, Derby Drive, Legacy Lane and Churchill Court. Staff wear polo shirts and khakis, not scrubs; and tucking a nurse’s station off of a hallway, instead of making it the hub of multiple hallways, avoids the ‘battleship’ appearance that many facilities have.”

The unseen foundation for the visible attractions of Westport Place, she added, is Trilogy’s standards and philosophy of “servant leadership.” Regularly scheduled feedback from patients and their families helps fine-tune services and goals, which are re-evaluated every six months.

“Exceeding expectations includes paying attention to detail. What name does a resident want to be called? When does he or she want to get up or take a shower?” she said. “Servant leadership means that the executive director is here to serve the staff; and they, in turn, are servant leaders to our residents. Westport Place may be new, but we’re already walking the talk.”
