Before you think about a quick nip/tuck to finally rid yourself of unwanted fat, you may want to consider a new fast, effective weight loss method making waves on the market and all across the media.
CoolSculpting, a revolutionary body contouring treatment for melting away stubborn fat, has become a popular alternative to the surgical procedure of liposuction, and is now offered in Louisville at Physician’s Center for Beauty.
Dr. Sean Maguire, staff physician at Physician’s Center for Beauty, visited J Michael’s Spa & Salon on Oct. 23 to present a free Botox & Cool Sculpting 101 Seminar to inform men and women interested in the relatively inexpensive and effective non-invasive treatment.
“I can tell you (CoolSculpting) works,” said Dr. Maguire. “I feel very comfortable recommending it for those people that have problem areas. It’s not a weight loss method for people that need to lose weight, but for those people that are basically at their ideal body weight or are doing well with their weight, (they) just have some problem areas that are not responsive to diet and exercise, and those areas primarily are the abdomen and the love handles.”
The FDA-approved procedure is best suited for subcutaneous (beneath the skin) fat found in the abdomen and love handles, though it can be performed on areas of the arm and occasionally the thigh. The method of CoolSculpting was developed following the discovery of popsicle panniculitis, a phenomenon detected when a doctor noticed children who ate popsicles frequently experienced selectively damaged subcutaneous fat. The revelation motivated scientists to apply the finding to fat loss procedures, and, thus, CoolSculpting was born.
With the CoolSculpting treatment, a cooling unit is placed on the area of fat a patient would like to lose. The device draws the bulge up between two cooling panels, eliciting a firm pull and pressure. The cooling unit causes targeted fat cells to collapse and release their contents – fats and triglycerides – into surrounding tissues. These contents are then picked up by the body’s lymphatic system and ultimately excreted. The body will continue to flush fat cells for up to four to six months after the treatment, though a person may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after the procedure and will witness the most dramatic results after one to three months.
Once the CoolSculpting treatment is complete, a massage therapist smooths out the treated area. Since CoolSculpting is completely non-surgical, a patient can typically return to normal activity immediately. Some people experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is a temporary effect and will resolve completely.
To illustrate the ease of the treatment and the CoolSculpting method, Dr. Maguire allowed attendees to witness a live demonstration during the seminar. He warned that the first five minutes can be somewhat uncomfortable for a patient, but once the area becomes numb from the cold, there is little discomfort. In fact, many men and women will read or play on their electronic devices to pass the time during the procedure, which typically takes one hour for the abdomen and one hour for each of the love handles.
As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, long-term results should remain stable, however, each individual fat cell can enlarge if a person were to overeat. “If someone does gain a significant amount of weight, what we generally see is that (the targeted) fat is more evenly distributed into other areas.” Dr. Maguire explained.
Dr. Maguire encourages his patients to decide up-front whether they want one or two treatments so the second procedure can be performed approximately one month later. Based on past procedures, he’s found results tend to compound themselves when a treatment is repeated in close proximity. “For the right patient, two treatments oftentimes can give us results close to what we can get with liposuction,” Dr. Maguire said. “It’s pretty impressive for those people that are basically in good shape (but) just have problem areas.”
If you’ve tried diet and exercise, but still seem to have difficulty eliminating certain areas of fat, CoolSculpting can help you achieve your desired end-result without the worry of surgery or the hassle of scheduling downtime. This is no fad treatment or weight loss gimmick. With generally permanent fat loss, there’s plenty of reason why CoolSculpting has garnered so much hype and is worth your investment to look your best yet.
“I have not had a single device, non-surgical or otherwise, that has given us (such) consistent results (as CoolSculpting) that I’ve been able to say, ‘This is going to work for you,’” Dr. Maguire assured. “In the right patient (CoolSculpting is) going to work, and the results are going to be significant and measurable.”
