An average day in the life of Bert Kremer is spent whipping his clients into excellent shape, but for six months last year, he added research to his regime as he spent hours looking for ways to expand ProFormance Fitness, a personal training facility located at 2041 River Road.
Kremer owns ProFormance with Cary Cox. Founded in 2003, ProFormance has built a large client base of business executives and student athletes who come to the facility for one-on-one fitness instruction.
After Kremer’s six months of research, along with the addition of 3,500 square feet of space and a 6,000-square-foot baseball facility, ProFormance Fitness has almost doubled the size of both its infrastructure and clientele.
The additional space, which was added in January, is where ProFormance’s new boot camp and Zumba classes are held. With a current trend in military-style training and dance workouts, Kremer and Cox decided to create a separate entity of their business where individuals could work out in a group setting.
“The heart and soul of our business is personal training,” Cox said. “But, kind of the trend now is doing group (workouts), so we’re also adding that. Our boot camp is kind of like a group personal training camp. We want to individualize in a group-type atmosphere.”
With personal training at the core of the business, ProFormance’s staff strives to develop a connection with their clients even in a group setting.
“The way we really separate ourselves is by making it a point to connect with everybody on an individual basis,” Kremer said. “We said we’ll do (group training) but we’re going to give it 1,000 percent to make sure that people still feel special by coming here.”
Boot camp and Zumba classes are filling quickly each week with veterans and newcomers, alike.
“It’s our job to take care of you and to win you over so you want to come back,” Cox said. “The best feeling in the world when you’re working out with us is actually getting to leave. It’s a tough workout and it feels great once you get finished. We want you to walk out and feel like that was challenging and that you’d never have done that on your own.”
Cox and Kremer collaborate with one another to create a systematic boot camp workout for their clients.
“In six months, we haven’t done the same workout twice,” Cox said. “Each one is different. It takes us longer to come up with the workout than it does to do the workout.”
In September, ProFormance will sponsor and compete in Rugged Maniac, a 5K obstacle course race that includes a 7-foot-high wall climb, barbed wire crawl, 60-foot water slide and fire pit. They also hope to host a “boot camp games” fundraiser in the winter, where boot camps from around the city will compete against one another.
Though the two enjoy conducting book camp workouts – especially Cox with his five years of experience in the Marine Corps – neither Kremer nor Cox will attempt Zumba class.
“We have several people ask us when we’re going to go out there,” Kremer said. “But we will not do it. We are not dancers.”
“I’ve heard good things about Zumba,” Cox added. “I’ll never know though because I won’t do the class.”
While they joke about avoiding any involvement with Zumba, Cox does give the class credit for being a great workout.
“If you love to get out there and dance, get out there,” Cox said. “It’s a tough class. A lot of people say their quads are woken up for the first time. Everybody walks out pouring sweat.”
ProFormance offers a 10- or 20-class punch card for Zumba class, which expires after six months. However, when it comes to personal training, ProFormance doesn’t offer memberships or package deals.
“We don’t do memberships,” Cox said. “We don’t tie anybody into a commitment. I’ll give you your money back if you felt like I didn’t take care of you. We do not have to charge an arm and a leg for people to come in here. We tell people to shop around, but to try us. We do what we can to get you to your goals, and I’m telling you we have the expertise, and the energy here is amazing.”
