Khalil Batshon has seen it too often: A couple asks a friend to dispense beverages at their wedding, only to have the service be slipshod – or worse, let a guest become tipsy and head for the highway.

To prevent such problems, he opened Bar Ties Event Bartending Services in January. The business provides everything for beverage service except the liquor, right down to tiny swords for impaling olives.

A New Jersey native, Batshon has called Louisville home since he was 3.

Five years ago, at age 20, he bought a sports bar and grill; that hands-on experience laid the groundwork for Bar Ties.

“I did this same service by myself twice last year, at a friend’s wedding and a political event,” he said. “For an efficient, professional presentation, it’s best to have someone for whom bartending services is their 100 percent job.”

Batshon formed the idea for Bar Ties with partner Carlos Guzman, president of Infinity Marketing. They have known each other for two years, and joined forces to dispense liquid refreshment at the last Meet Me At The Altar bridal showcase. The success of that event encouraged them to start this new venture.

“We were joking around, and I said, ‘Let’s call it Barflies,’” Batshon said. “Later that evening, Carlos e-mailed me the name ‘Bar Ties,’ and we decided to go with it.”

Bar TiesSince opening three months ago, Bar Ties Event Bartending Services has booked several weddings and corporate events. On its website (www.bar-ties.com), prospective clients fill out a brief form to receive an instant quote; the form is automatically e-mailed to Batshon, who arranges a free consultation.

“We have several packages of services, the most popular of which is our Silver Tie. It offers a lot but isn’t the most expensive,” he said. “We’ll meet our customers’ needs by making adjustments to any package. If all they want at their event is beer and wine, I won’t sell them the Diamond or Platinum Tie packages.”

Bar Ties helps clients calculate how many drinks they will require and locate the best deals around. All other needs are taken care of in-house. When the big day rolls around, Bar Ties charges only for the time its employees are working; there is no fee for set-up and take-down. Bartenders, male and female, wear black unless the client requests otherwise.

“All of our bartenders are people I’ve trained. I won’t hire anyone off the street or let some agency pick them,” Batshon said. “Our bartenders are certified by TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures), so they know how to read someone’s level of intoxication. I don’t want the bride and groom, or the event committee, to have to wonder how their bartenders are treating the guests.”

A member of the Louisville Wedding Association, Batshon has been busy building relationships with event companies throughout the area, including Fleur de Lis Events & Design.

“Louisville will be a great city for our business. We’re looking forward to Derby events and parties next year,” he said. “We take pride in giving 1,000 percent effort, and that’s what will set us apart. When it all comes together for our client, you’ll see me grinning from ear to ear.”
