Community Foundation Board
The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced the appointment of nine members to its board of directors: Claire Alagia, Bob Bordogna, Mark Campisano, Toni Clem, Harriet Lair, Stephanie Smith, Patti Swope, Jim Taylor and Gary Ulmer.

Claire Alagia has worked with Bittners for more than 26 years in several positions including CEO, executive vice president and corporate secretary and marketing director. In addition, she serves on a number of community boards and was an honoree for the Salute to Catholic Schools Alumni. She graduated from the University of Kentucky and was a 2010 Leadership Kentucky graduate.

Bob Bordogna is executive vice president of Todd-Veredus Asset Management. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors for Wellspring and in the past has been a board member for the American Red Cross, Rotary Club of Louisville, The Colgate Darden Graduate Business School and St. Francis School in Goshen.

Mark Campisano is senior vice president and the assistant director of the family office for Atlas Brown. Campisano serves as a member of the Executive Advisory Board for the Rubel School of Business at Bellarmine University and as chair of the Al & Guy Campisano Family Trust, a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation. He has served on the boards of the Community Foundation of Louisville (1995-2002), Dare to Care Food Bank, St. Joseph’s Children’s Home, Boys Haven’s Entrepreneur Committee and the Parish Council at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish.

Toni Clem is president of Creative Alliance and is responsible for the development, management, and media execution of multi-million dollar key accounts, including Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Churchill Downs, Caesars Indiana, A&W, Long John Silver’s, Yum! Brands, Brown-Forman, Bellarmine University, Greater Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, CHS, Mikasa, Norton Healthcare and Atria Assisted Living.

Harriet Lair is vice president, commercial relationship manager for Fifth Third Bank of Kentucky. Lair began her career 22 years ago as an investment accountant at Fifth Third Bank and through the years has served in several different positions. In 1994, she started the Government and Institutional (G&I) group in the Louisville market, and she is responsible for growing the bank’s G&I portfolio in the Kentucky market.

Stephanie Smith is president of Unistar Purchasing Solutions, which enables regional companies and non-profit agencies to reduce their general operating costs for common overhead products and services. She has also been active on the boards of a number of organizations including Grateful Greens, Great Northern Holding, the Home of the Innocents, Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Kentucky Humanities Council, Goodwill Industries, Louisville Bar Foundation and Ars Femina. She was a member of the Leadership Louisville class of 1992.

Patti Swope is chairman of the board for Sam Swope Auto Group. She guides the company’s strategic plan, manages company real estate and facilities, and serves as spokesperson in television and print advertising. Patti is or has been a board member for various organizations, including the Kentucky Humane Society, Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Zoo Foundation and the National Association of Women Business Owners, and she volunteers for other causes in the community.

Jim Taylor is president and CEO of University of Louisville Hospital. Prior to UofL Hospital, Taylor was the president of the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont from 1982 to 1994. He holds a Doctor of Management degree from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, a Master of Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota and a M.B.A. from the University of Hawaii.

Gary Ulmer is a lifelong resident of Louisville and a graduate of St. Xavier High School and the University of Kentucky. He served as vice president in corporate banking at Liberty National Bank (now Chase), and in 1994, Ulmer became president of the Louisville Bats. He is very active in the community and serves or previously served on several boards of directors, including The Convention and Visitors Bureau, St. Xavier High School, the Louisville Sports Commission, Better Business Bureau, Metro United Way, Salvation Army, Children’s Hospital Foundation and others. He is also a member of the Downtown Rotary and has completed 25 straight Derby Festival mini-marathons.

The Community Foundation of Louisville was founded in 1984, and is the largest community foundation in Kentucky with $350 million in assets and over 1,100 charitable funds. Each fund has its own name and charitable purpose as defined by its donors. Waterstep Helps Water Quality
A team of volunteers from WaterStep, a nonprofit organization that works to save lives at risk from waterborne illness around the world, recently trained 31 villagers in the town of Embangweni to repair 50 hand pumps in their town, which is located in the Mzimba district in the Northern Region of Malawi. The repaired pumps are attached to freshwater wells that service the village’s primary school, as well as other nearby facilities and residential areas. Due to the pump repairs, thousands of women no longer need to walk for miles to rivers and open wells for water, and children no longer have to suffer from unsafe water.

The WaterStep volunteers that provided the two classes of training were Robert Holloway, Lynn Smith and Larry Bentley. The average cost of a deep bore well with a hand pump is $8,000. By training and repairing the 50 defective hand pumps, $400,000 was saved. WaterStep staff and volunteers visit third-world countries each year to help the more than 1.1 billion people worldwide affected by the global water crisis. Mansbach Research Endowment
Birthday parties for 5-year-olds usually involve gifts – and as the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute turned five on Sept. 21, it was no exception. The Mansbach Foundation of Ashland, Ky., provided $1 million to establish the Mansbach Research Endowment, to support the hiring of a new researcher in regenerative medicine at the CII, a joint collaboration between the University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services. The gift was formally presented at the CII’s reception celebrating its five years of “advancements, inventions and innovations” by John Woods III, vice president of the foundation’s Board of Directors. The gift was accepted by Stuart Williams, Ph.D., CII executive and scientific director, and Laman Gray, M.D., CII medical director.

The university also intends to leverage the gift though matching gifts from other sources such as corporations, other foundations and individuals. The new endowment also will be eligible for a “Bucks for Brains” matching gift if the Kentucky legislature is able to resume funding of the Bucks for Brains program in the future.

Leave It At The Door
You don’t have to have your cell phone turned on and glued to your ear at all times. At least, that’s the message Louisville Restaurant, Dish on Market, is suggesting. They are offering their customers a 5% discount if they are willing to leave their phones with the maître de at the door. Although some find talking on cell phones in public to be rude, owners, Marshall and Anderson Grissom, say their initiative has nothing to do with that. Instead, they want customers to focus wholly on their meals, their bourbon or drinks, and the people they are with and not on calls, texts, emails and the internet.

Grief Workshops
Heritage Hall at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville will be the location of two special workshops by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, free for community members and professionals. On Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., the topic will be “The Wilderness of Grief: Finding Your Way” for anyone in the community experiencing grief in their lives. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, the topic will be “The Art of ‘Companioning’ the Mourner” for caregivers: clergy, nurses, physicians, social workers, counselors, educators and other caring for bereaved people. These workshops are made possible by Pearson’s Funeral Directors and are at no cost to attendees.

Dr. Alan Wolfelt, a psychologist and grief counselor of international reputation, will be the presenter of these programs. A past recipient of the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Death Educator Award, Dr. Wolfelt is Director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition located in Fort Collins, Colorado. 2012 Female Entrepreneurs
Spalding University College of Education’s Leadership Education Doctoral Program and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Family Scholar House New campus
On Sept. 27, Family Scholar House celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Parkland Scholar House campus, located at the corner of Catalpa and Dumesnil Streets in the heart of the Parkland neighborhood in western Louisville. In 2013, the historic Parkland School, built in 1891, will become home for 48 families in the Family Scholar House residential program and home to programs to benefit the neighborhood. The project will include the renovation of the historic school as well as new construction to provide apartment homes for single-parent families, a computer lab, program and meeting space, a community kitchen and dining room, reading areas, a playground, green space and parking.

Congressman John Yarmuth, Mayor Greg Fischer and Councilwoman Attica Scott attended the groundbreaking event. This is the fourth campus for the Louisville-based Family Scholar House, in addition to its Louisville Scholar House campus, Downtown Scholar House campus and Stoddard Johnston Scholar House campus. The $10 million renovation and construction project was made possible thanks to low-income housing tax credits awarded through Kentucky Housing Corporation, support from Louisville Metro Government and Louisville Metro Housing Authority, and a generous grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation. March For Babies Chairman
The March of Dimes Greater Kentucky Chapter is pleased to announce David Gray, President of Baptist Hospital East, will serve as chairman for the 2013 Louisville March for Babies. The walk will be held May 11, 2013 on the Big Four Lawn at Waterfront Park.

Mr. Gray will lead the campaign to raise awareness and gain support for March of Dimes research and community programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. The March for Babies helps in the fight to save babies from premature birth and other serious threats to infant health. 2013 marks the 75th Anniversary of the March of Dimes. Mr. Gray has served as president and chief executive officer of Baptist Hospital East since February 2011. Mr. Gray earned a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1988. He received a bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Western Kentucky University.

Greater Louisville Project
The Greater Louisville Project (GLP) issued a report on Sept. 25 titled “2012: Updates on Education and Quality of Place with a New Look at 21st Century Jobs.” The report introduces a new frame for 21st Century Jobs – the Innovation Economy. In addition, newly appointed Director Christen Boone was introduced, and will lead the GLP’s efforts to act as a civic catalyst toward a shared agenda for

long-term progress. Boone will manage the strategic work of the Policy Board, oversee research and data analysis, develop the annual Competitive City report, manage new initiatives, and serve as the spokesperson for the GLP. The announcement took place at the University of Louisville Cardiovascular Innovation Institute.

Among the 2012 report’s findings, Louisville is ranked first among peers, such as Cincinnati, Nashville and Indianapolis among others, with the highest rate of improvement in young adults with bachelor’s degrees or higher during the study period. In addition, Louisville had an increase in the percent of young adults, age 25-34. Since 2000, Louisville added 7,200 young adults, providing evidence that the 20-year brain drain may be reversing and becoming a “brain gain.” Other key findings were listed in the categories of education, quality of place and 21st century jobs.

The Greater Louisville Project is an independent, non-partisan civic initiative whose mission is to act as a catalyst for civic action by providing research and data analysis to engage the community in a shared agenda for long-term progress.

Reach Award
The March of Dimes is proud to present the 2012 Commercial REACH Award (Real Estate ACHievement Award) to honor an outstanding individual whose commercial real estate activities and philanthropic contributions have significantly enhanced the community. Most Powerful Women In Banking
American Banker magazine has honored U.S. Bancorp women in the magazine’s “Most Powerful Women in Banking” annual issue, released Oct. 1. Pamela Joseph and Leslie Godridge are included among the “25 Most Powerful Women in Banking,” Lynn Heitman was named a “Woman to Watch” and, for the sixth time, a team of 84 U.S. Bancorp women was chosen as a 2012 Top Banking Team.

Joseph, vice chair of U.S. Bancorp and head of the company’s $4.6 billion payment services division, was the highest-ranking U.S. Bancorp woman on the “Most Powerful” list, earning the #5 position for 2012. It is the seventh year that she has been included in the most powerful
women ranking.

Godridge, executive vice president of national corporate and institutional banking, ranked #16 on the list of most powerful women. This is the second consecutive year she has been included in the “Most Powerful Women in Banking” list. In her five years with U.S. Bank, Godridge has grown the national corporate and institutional portfolio 250 percent and greatly expanded the bank’s wholesale presence in the eastern half of the nation.
