AT&T, Junior Achievement Collaborate
AT&T employees teamed up with 50 Western High School students to mentor life and career skills on Dec. 14, as part of AT&T’s goal to provide 1 million hours of mentoring to students at risk of dropping out of high school. Aspire Job Mentoring is part of AT&T’s Aspire Mentoring Academy, the key community engagement program of the company’s $350 million investment in Aspire, focused on high school success leading to college and career readiness. AT&T is collaborating with Junior Achievement (JA) to go beyond traditional job shadowing to job mentoring by providing students with an enhanced experience through project-based activities and helping them learn how to problem-solve in a team setting.
In early 2012, AT&T and JA reached the milestone of providing 100,000 job shadow opportunities to students through the AT&T/JA Job Shadow Initiative. The initiative, a key component of AT&T Aspire’s first four years, helped students realize their potential and connect the dots between high school success and their future success. Aspire Mentoring Academy is among the most significant U.S. corporate educational initiatives. The program, which has impacted over 1 million students in all 50 states since its initial launch in 2008, connects with students in new and more effective ways, such as with interactive games, social media and tapping into the power of personal connections involving many of AT&T’s approximately 240,000 employees.
Junior Achievement Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame Awards Dinner
Junior Achievement has inducted 94 Laureates since 1982. With the new addition of four outstanding business leaders – the late Leonard E. Lyles, corporate executive and developer; John R. Guthrie, founder of Guthrie/Mayes Public Relations; Mary Moseley, president and CEO of The Al J. Schneider Co.; and Max L. Shapira, president of Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. – the organization will have 100 Laureate portraits in the permanent Hall of Fame display at the Kentucky International Convention Center. There will be a Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame Awards Dinner to benefit Junior Achievement, Feb. 28 at the Cascade Ballroom inside the Kentucky International Convention Center, 221 S. Fourth St. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. and the awards dinner will follow at 7. The honorary chair for the evening will be James R. Allen, CEO of Hilliard Lyons. Regulatory Update Seminar

The seminar will cover the new and expanded protocol, guidelines and regulations from federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Board and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The effect these federal agencies will have on the health care, labor and employment and environmental industries will be discussed in-depth. Private Rooms At Baptist East
To make patient stays as comfortable as possible, Baptist Hospital East is making the move to private rooms. By 2014, patient rooms will be private – with the exception of the Crisis Management Unit for psychiatric patients and the Rehabilitation unit. Removing one bed from the current semi-private rooms will free space for bedside examinations with portable equipment such as echocardiograms, and for nursing care. Patients will have better control over their environment – from the TV remote control to the noise level.
As part of the conversion project, additional monitored beds will be placed on two nursing units on the hospital’s fifth floor to provide special care for patients with certain medical complications. Baptist East will remain a 519-bed hospital after the conversion. The hospital’s most recent shift to private rooms came with renovation and expansion of its neonatal intensive care unit to eight single-family rooms. The project is made possible through a $2.8 million donation from the Baptist Hospital Foundation.
KentuckyOne Health announced on Dec. 18 that Jeff Murphy has been promoted to vice president, Marketing and Communications. In this statewide leadership role, Murphy will lead the strategy and implementation for KentuckyOne’s marketing, branding, communications, media relations and physician engagement (physician liaison) efforts.
Murphy first joined the organization in 1991 as part of the marketing and communications team for Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky. He served as director of marketing and communications for Saint Joseph HealthCare beginning in 1998; was then promoted to regional director of marketing communications for the former Saint Joseph Health System in 2008; and most recently served as system director of marketing for KentuckyOne Health. Jeff has also been involved in marketing and communications strategy and policy development at the national level, and serves on Catholic Health Initiatives’ Strategic Communications Leadership Council.
