The Fryars celebrated the last Friday of the 2013 Fish Fry Challenge at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, where they turned Good Friday into a “Great” one. Folks from all over the county declare Guardian Angels the “Best Fish in Town,” and the Fryars wanted to see what the hype is all about.

But before we dive in… We hope the volunteers, readers and other patrons have enjoyed our weekly columns as much as we did this year. We’re ooking forward to new places and new faces next Lent for the 2014 Fish Fry Challenge.

Fish: Patrons travel from all over town for the fried and baked fish at Guardian Angels on Preston. Fryars got two of the thickest, freshest fried filets of cod they’ve had in town. At $7 per sandwich on your choice of bread, the price is a little steep but can feed two Fryars per. And the flavor is enough to give 3-time “best fish” winner St. Bernard a run for its money.
Fryars’ Score: 5 whole fish

Sides/desserts: The mac and cheese, baked beans, and slaw are all delicious, but what separates Guardian Angels from the pack is its pan-fried rolled oysters that fill a huge basket. Fryars also loved the popcorn shrimp and homemade desserts.
Fryars’ Score: 4.5 fish

Beverages: Guardian Angels pleases almost everybody with a selection of both Miller and Bud products. Reasonably priced at $2 per can and ice cold.
Fryars’ Score: 3.5 fish

Venue: With great fish comes great crowds, but Guardian Angels does a remarkable job ushering folks through the long line. The cafeteria makes a great dining room.
Fryars’ Score: 4 whole fish

Friendliness: The Fryars were impressed with how people come from miles around for Guardian Angels’ fish. These folks, like the Fryars, are authorities in the field of Friday night fish and beer consumption. A great group to talk a little Fry!
Fryars’ Score: 4 whole fish

Overall: If you’re in search for the best fish in town, you must try Guardian Angels before you make any declaration. When asked if it beats all, one St. Bernard graduate Fryar said (off the record) “No comment.” Not too many places can boast the quality, flavor and portions Guardian Angels offers. With great sides to complement, this spot is a must for all Fry lovers.
Fryars’ Score: 4.5 fish
