Personal trainer at APT Fitness and Zumba instructor Michelle Yeager talked to The Voice-Tribune about working out, New Year’s resolutions and the newest workout craze.

How will you spend New Year’s Eve?
I just got engaged toward the end of October (getting married in four months!), so I am excited to spend my first New Year’s with my fiance, Milton! Our first date was on Valentine’s Day 2010, so this will be our first New Year’s Eve together. Milton has a good friend who lives in Cincinnati who has an annual party at his house. We will get dressed to the nines and spend our evening there. I’m excited to meet some more of his friends and even more excited to kiss the man I will marry at the stroke of midnight!

When did you start getting into fitness training and competitions?
I started competing in gymnastics at the age of 6. Starting in first grade, I went to gymnastics lessons four-days-a-week. This transpired into cheerleading once I entered middle and high school and then my freshman year of college (at UNC Chapel Hill). Because I was always active in some type of sport, I have always tried to work out, stay in shape and maintain my athletic build.

In 2006, my mother passed away from Ovarian Cancer (my father passed away when I was in high school). When this happened, I ended up moving back into my childhood home. Being an only child, it was solely my responsibility to go through everything in the big ole house. Once the estate was finally settled, I realized I needed to do something for myself. I set a goal to enter my first figure competition in January 2008.

I only had seven weeks to train for my first figure show. Amazingly, I won and went on to do seven competitions that year. I switched from figure (no routine) to fitness (a two minute routine with one arm pushups and tumbling) and LOVE IT! I have come very close to turning professional. At the age of 34, I’m surprised that I can still tumble like I did in my teens and have become a big gym rat.

Many in the community were very supportive of my fitness competing. They also were able to see the visible changes I made with my body and often asked for ways to improve their own health and wellness. This brought forth my new passion for becoming a certified personal trainer, Zumba instructor and wellness coach!

You’re a trainer as well as teach Zumba. What is Zumba?
Per the Zumba website: “The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.

“The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba class!”

Why do you like Zumba so much?
I love to dance. I love to groove. I love to bring a smile to someone’s face. I love to help people get in shape. Zumba has been an amazing way to accomplish all of these things. The great thing about Zumba is there is no right or wrong way to move. It’s about feeling the beat. So many people want to get in shape, but need a little extra motivation. Zumba is such a fun way to “work it out” while burning hundreds of calories.

How many more people do you get signing up for workout sessions in January?
January should be called National Workout Month. Most people make resolutions to start working out. I started teaching Zumba classes at my current location, APT Fitness, this fall and expect my numbers to at least double in the beginning of the year.

What is at the top of your New Year’s resolution list?
Hmm “¦ I keep a journal and usually read my journal on New Year’s Eve to reflect on the year and decide my goals for the next year. I generally don’t have resolutions, but instead have goals. Some of my goals will be: (1) Grow my fitness business into a full-time career;,  (2) Plan a meaningful and successful wedding while spending as little money as possible; (3) Love through my heart, live through my passions!
