For the past decade, Larry Bisig has served as the official announcer at the Barnstable Brown Gala, the renowned Derby Eve party held at the Spring Drive home of Tricia Barnstable Brown, who hosts the fete with her sister, Priscilla Barnstable.
What’s it like to be “the voice” of the hottest pre-Derby party around? Bisig took the time to clue us in.
What was the best moment for you at this year’s Barnstable Brown Gala?
The number of people that show up and cheer, that is the most satisfying moment for me. … The celebrities are so generous and will go into the crowd more often than not. That’s an electric atmosphere I’m excited to be a part of. … You don’t have to be (supermodel) Marissa Miller to have your name called out at the Barnstable Brown Gala. That’s fun too.
Who were you most excited to meet?
I had an opportunity to meet (country singer) Miranda Lambert and the guests that she had brought with her to celebrate her bachelorette party. That was great.
How do you prepare for your gig as the announcer at the biggest Derby celebrity party?
It’s extremely well organized. Trish (Barnstable Brown) has a very well-run organization.
Do you get nervous?
No. No. Heck no. It’s a privilege to be down there. It was a lot more nerve-wracking to call the freshman games at St. X.
We really lucked out this year in terms of weather.
It was perfect. I have been at that event on Derby Eve where it is a deluge and they have figured out down to a science how to protect the (incoming guests) from the rain.
Did you have a good Derby weekend overall?
Oh, hell yes! My client is (Hall of Fame trainer) Bob Baffert. I play him. We won like devils on Friday, so of course Saturday I played (Baffert’s horse) Midnight Interlude. It’s an honor to be involved with (Bob Baffert Racing Stables).
Where will we see you next?
We have several events at Bisig Impact Group, including the upcoming Kentucky Reggae Festival at the Water Tower May 28-30 and the Louisville Blues ‘n’ Barbecue Festival July 8-10. Go to bisigimpactgroup.com for more information.
