Deanna and George Lindsey.

Behind the familiar voice of 102.3 The MAX’s George Lindsey is a woman with a sense of direction, who’s taught George everything he knows about the city of Louisville.

It’s a joke among the Lindseys, but George’s wife, Deanna, loves carrying around a map and always knows exactly where to go – even when George thinks there’s a better way to arrive at their destination.

For almost three decades, the Lindseys have taken on the road of life together, seeking the adventure that the world has to offer and laughing with each other all along the way.

As George explained, “You’ve got to find the fun in life. That’s the way we view life. You’ve got to enjoy the ride – and without a map.”

Geroge and Deanna Lindsey.“No you’ve got to have a map!” Deanna exclaimed.

How did you meet?
George and Deanna’s friends believed the couple were destined for one another long before the two ever came face-to-face. Deanna’s best friend and college roommate had started dating George; though at first, her friend had suggested Deanna be the one to go out with him.

“She kept saying, ‘If I ever introduce you all, you’re going to fall in love and get married,’ ” Deanna said. “Then she did introduce us and we did fall in love, but I couldn’t do anything about it because they were still dating.”

After Deanna’s friend went to Italy for a semester, Deanna happened to drive by George’s radio station while delivering sandwiches for her dad.

“He wrote down his number … and asked me to go out with him,” Deanna recalled. “At first I wouldn’t go out with him because I didn’t know if he and my friend were still going out.”

Eventually George convinced Deanna that he and Deanna’s friend were no longer a couple. Once George and Deanna finally went out, everyone’s expectations for the two came true.

How did he propose?
“We went to the Sixth Avenue restaurant,” Deanna said. “We were all dressed up. We had this wonderful meal and before they brought dessert I went to the restroom, and when I came back there were all these people standing at the table.”

The crowd initially confused Deanna, but she figured George had seen some people at the restaurant and had been talking to them while she was gone. After sitting down to eat dessert, the crowd did not stop staring. Finally, Deanna figured out what was going on.

“George had champagne, and he said we were going to have a toast,” Deanna explained. “Everyone kept looking at me and I’m thinking, ‘What is going on?’ George said, ‘Look in your glass,’ and there was the engagement ring.”

Geroge and Deanna Lindsey. How do you make it work on a day-to-day basis?
“By laughing,” George said. “Honestly, she’s the funny one in the family, and I get credit for it because a lot of the stuff I do on the show comes from talking to her. We like each other and have a good time with each other, and it doesn’t get old.”

“And, he’s not here in the morning,” Deanna joked.

“Yeah, our entire relationship is based on the fact that I’m not hogging the bathroom in the morning,” George said with a laugh. “I leave at 4 o’clock (a.m.), so she’s got the house to herself – just her and the boys.”

In all seriousness, Deanna attributes the couple’s successful relationship to the values they share as well as a little bit of fate.

“I think we were meant to be together,” Deanna said. “I know a lot of people think there’s no such thing as love at first sight, but I think for us it was love at first sight. At least, for me. I hope it was for George!”

How do you divide up household chores?
With George’s busy schedule, Deanna is typically the one cleaning the house and doing the laundry, but she assured that George does help on occasion.

“Five or six years into the relationship, we had our first child and Deanna wanted to stay home, so I had to be in a position where she could do that,” George said. “And she’s done such a wonderful job that now she won’t let me do any of it. She’s got it set up the way she likes it.”

One of George and Deanna’s first arguments was over the way George folded towels.

“I don’t care how you fold towels,” Deanna claimed. “You think it’s a big deal but I don’t really care, just as long as you fold them.”

“And so now I do,” George said with a smile.

Deanna and George Lindsey.Where do you like to go when you’re out ‘n’ about?
It almost seemed like they were joking at first, but Deanna insisted she loves to watch Jackie Chan movies, while George is always looking to catch the latest chick flick.

“That sounds a lot worse when you say it out loud,” George said.

“He’s always said I have the movie tastes of a 14-year-old boy,” Deanna said.

“I like dramas, not just romantic comedies – let me just point that out right now,” George clarified.

Besides going to the movies, George and Deanna also enjoy eating at various restaurants around town or taking a walk or bike ride through the city.

“We love restaurants and love to try out new restaurants,” George said. “We’re so blessed in this city to have so many great chefs. And we live close to the Nature Center, so we’re in the Nature Center a lot. We ride bikes together. We kind of just hang out. Our motto is ‘Let’s go. Let’s just do it.’ ”

What is one thing you always do as a couple?
George and Deanna always attend church together with their family.

“We still make our oldest son get up and go to church with us, and he’s in college,” George said. “There are some days he’s a little more amenable to that than others.”

Another tradition that the Lindseys keep is sitting down at the dinner table together to eat dinner.

“Even if you’re not there, we sit down at the dinner table,” Deanna told George. “And then there’s more leftovers.”

What is some advice you would offer couples – new or old – who desire to walk through life in tandem?
“Make sure you have similar values,” Deanna said. “George and I both put a real high importance on family and being able to take care of our family, whether that’s our old aunts and uncles and grandparents or our kids.”

Do’s

“I would say don’t overthink it,” George advised. “You shouldn’t have to analyze and rationalize being together or make some huge change in your life or compromise to be with somebody. It works or it doesn’t. I just honestly don’t think you have to overanalyze being in love and being with each other.”

Deanna shared her Do’s as well: “Go to church together and have a date night at least once a month or so.”

“So many couples say they don’t have time,” George added. “You have to make time. Laugh too, and laugh at each other. And don’t ever go to bed mad at each other. That’s hard for me because I love carrying grudges and holding onto things.”

Don’ts

“Never build a house together,” George said. “It was awful. By the time we got through that, our first son was 9.”
