What is your fashion view?
Fashion is simply a self-expression of one’s personality and emotion. To quote the late Patrick Swayze in the film To Wong Foo, “I think today is a ‘say something’ hat day … I’m going to wear a ‘say something’ hat.†Fashion should make you smile and make the people around you smile as well.
How do you describe your style?
Dry Martini with a twist. Currently, I’m channeling ‘50s and ‘60s Euro prep and being fairly conservative with my personal styling – well-tailored trousers, waistcoats, bow ties, etc. However, my style usually changes with the seasons. Overall, I tend to stay fairly clean cut with my clothing choices, but I will always incorporate some quirky accessory or something that says, “I definitely don’t take myself too seriously.â€
What are your favorite pieces?
My cashmere Burberry scarf, an old pair of black Converse “Chuck Taylor’s†that I’ll wear with pretty much anything, a vintage silver tie clip that I stole from my dad and my Singer Sewing Machine circa 1982. Being a very skinny person, everything has to be tailored so I taught myself how to sew and I tailor all of my clothing myself.
Where is your favorite place to shop?
Occasionally, I’ll find some pieces in some of the boutique stores in town, like Gifthorse (owned by my friends Shawn Beirne and Butch Sager) or Discoveries on Bardstown Road. But, mostly I order my clothes online. Two companies that I am obsessed with are Topman London and Zara. Most recently, I have been drooling over the clothes on the Gilt Groupe web site. Fantastic couture fashions at a fraction of the cost.
Who is your fashion icon? Why? Â
For their personal style and overall persona, pretty much any of the Old Hollywood gents like Clark Gable, James Stewart or Frank Sinatra. It’s really not even a “fashion thing†with these guys, but how they carried themselves. They could sit at a bar by themselves, sipping on their cocktail, and you would not be able to take your eyes off of them.
From a fashion perspective, and simply for their unabashed creativity and flawless execution, I would have to say I really look to Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.
