After running the blog JustGQ.com, former University of Louisville football player Joshua McDonald partnered with Ashley Lyons and James Doaty of Rezint Clothing to launch the neckwear and accessory line, Debonair Bowties, last April. Following in Ralph Lauren’s footsteps by selling ties and pocket squares, Debonair is looking to expand online and throughout the region a become a fashion icon, too.
What is your fashion view?
I think fashion is a personal extension of who we are as people. You can use it to speak for you so that you don’t have to say a word to send a message. Personally, I like to stand out, and I pride myself on being an individual and not (being) negatively influenced by the masses.
How would you describe your style?
I lean more to the preppy style, but I’m very steadfast and consistent in what I wear. I’m not very influenced by trends a whole lot. What I wear is what I wear. I’m cheap by nature, so I would say a preppy-cheap-chic.
What are your favorite pieces?
Obviously the bow ties. As far as shoes go, I firmly believe in a nice pair of brown loafers. I stopped wearing tennis shoes recreationally around ’08.
Where do you like to shop?
Boutiques. Our ties and pocket squares are sold at Revelry Boutique Gallery off of Barrett Avenue. … It was a very easy fit because that’s where you get things that everybody isn’t going to have.
Who is your fashion icon and why?
Kanye West. (Matt Bomer’s character) Neal Caffrey on “White Collar” and (Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams) on “Suits.”
What kind of man can rock a bow tie?
I think that you need to be a very headstrong individual who’s very secure within himself. In addition to being a confident man, it takes a smooth character to wear a bow tie.
