Johnathan Young is the son of Jill and Greg Young, and he was born on Dec. 28, 2010. He has two sisters, Emily and Anna.
Johnathan was born with one of the most severe congenital heart defects, called Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome. Babies born with this condition only have half of a heart. He had his first open-heart surgery at Kosair Children’s Hospital at six days old, and he had seven other surgeries before his parents were able to take him home for the first time – on Feb. 14, 2011 – or as his family now calls it, “Heart Day.”
Johnathan will have his third heart surgery this summer. Without surgical intervention, his condition is 100 percent fatal. The surgeries don’t “fix” his heart, but do allow him to have a chance at life.
This week, Feb. 10 through 16, is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Kosair Children’s Hospital, home to the region’s only congenital heart center, is currently developing plans for a new cardiac intensive care unit featuring a dedicated, expanded area with technology and experts focused solely on heart care, including physicians, nurses and ancillary staff. While the plans are still being designed, construction is slated to begin in 2014.
Financial support from the community through the Children’s Hospital Foundation will be critical in bringing this project to reality. If you would like to make a donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, visit www.kosairchildrens.com or call 502.629.8060.
