Ready to run

This time of year brings back fond memories of the beginning of my running days. Driving through the park means dodging runners, and this always reminds me of long runs while training for the Triple Crown with my bother, Keith, and many of my friends.

The Louisville Triple Crown of Running kicks of with the Anthem 5K Fitness Classic on Saturday, March 6. That’s followed by the Rodes City Run 10K on Saturday, March 20, and the Papa John’s 10 Miler on Saturday, April 3.

Our running group often began pounding the pavement when most folks were still tucked in bed. Our training would typically begin in January, and even if conditions were less than inviting, our group members would rarely miss a run.

I vividly remember the first time I met running pal Stephanie Frigo, who is 5-foot-11. I was running on a treadmill at the old Milestone. She was running beside me with her legs that appeared to be at my eye level. I remember asking her, “How fast can you run?” This was the beginning of many adventures and stories.

Most runners try to figure out the magic formula that will lead to the best performance on race day. It could be loading up on carbohydrates the night before or not consuming any alcohol weeks prior to a run. Race day conversations usually consist of checking the each other’s well being: Did everyone sleep well? Are your legs feeling OK? Anyone need Advil?

The rewarding feeling of completing a race is just one reason we keep coming back. Crossing the finish line is well worth the aches and pains endured through months of dedicated training. And there’s no greater experience than reaching the pinnacle of your training right before you hear the gunshot to start the race.

These factors are what keep us running and drive some of us to move on to larger obstacles such as marathons. Regardless of the reasons, the racing bug will eventually bite!
