Diabetes refers to the increase in blood sugar and lower amounts of insulin produced by the body used to regulate blood sugar. This increase in blood sugar has many harmful side effects and is an ever increasing problem in the U.S.

There are three types of diabetes: type I, type II and gestational. Type I is almost always something someone is born with. Gestational is temporary and occurs during pregnancy.

Type II is often called onset diabetes because it develops as we grow older with poor diet and exercise. This is by far the most common type of diabetes. Unfortunately, it is being diagnosed at much younger ages than it was even 20 years ago. I will be discussing ways to improve diet and exercise to lower your risk of developing diabetes in a later column.

As for now, I’m going to explain how Cheryl Henson has filled a void in my life around diabetes. My mom was diabetic for 15 years, had high blood pressure and cholesterol and fought obesity as long as I’ve known. I’ve worked in the health field my entire professional career and longer. Many people would often ask, “Why don’t you help your mom out?”

The most honest answer I could provide was, “You can’t help someone unless they want to help themselves first.”

At the most amazing opportune time, Cheryl walked into my life. Seven weeks ago she began our boot camp program; six weeks ago my mother passed away. They had many similarities.

Cheryl has type II diabetes, fights obesity and is on a growing list of medications. The difference was attitude. I have never met someone so deep in a hole that was willing to do anything to get out of it. She wears a smile 100 percent of the time and has the heart of a lion. Every trainer we have is amazed upon meeting her. She won’t miss a class regardless of her sore knees or possibility of embarrassment from inability to perform the exercises. She is now a class favorite; everyone cheers her on and her knees aren’t sore after every class any longer.

About two weeks ago, I noticed she was pretty down, which never happens. After sending a quick follow up email to see how she was feeling the next morning, we were thrilled to find out the dosing on her medications were unregulated as a result of her lifestyle changes. For the first time in 15 years, she had to reduce her insulin along with other drugs due to her increase in exercise and improved eating habits. She was told to chart her glucose levels 10 to 15 times a day for the next several weeks in order to help get them better regulated.

Her doctor also advised her that she would probably never reduce her insulin dose more than two units. Upon her follow-up appointment with her doctor the next week, they took her dose down 10 units. She has reacted perfect to the change and continues to have regulated blood sugar levels.

Cheryl is down 10 pounds in five weeks and anyone who meets her would think she won the lottery. On a recent family vacation, she made her whole family walk 15,000 steps a day before they could cruise around or be lazy. We are all so proud of her and can’t emphasize enough the importance of exercise and healthy eating. The improvements will continue, and her quality of life will get better with every day that goes by. That is the decision she has made. The void of always wanting to help my mom is being filled, and Cheryl will never understand how much she has helped me out already along her tough journey.

I was born and raised in Louisville along with my four sisters. I graduated from St. X in 98’and University of Louisville in 02’. I have two amazing kids that are much sweeter to life than I ever was.
Although, I didn’t really know what all went into it, I dreamed of owning a gym and knew that I wanted to help people out. I received a degree in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Marketing at UL, both of which were very helpful in getting me where I am today.
I have 10 years experience as a Personal Trainer. I have nationally accredited certifications through NSCA-CSCS and ACE. In 2003 I met Cary Cox and he already had the same visions that I did. We didn’t want people sitting around reading magazines on machines. Our past experience from the big box gyms helped us realize we wanted something different. We were looking for real results in a private atmosphere where intimidation doesn’t exist. ProFormance Fitness has grown from the original facility three times. The latest addition added another 5000 sq/ft to keep up with demand. We are fortunate to have amazing trainers and lots of energetic clients.
