Kentucky Alliance Unity Dinner
The Kentucky Alliance Against Racist And Political Oppression held their 15th annual Unity Dinner, Dec. 1 at Wayside Mission’s Hotel Louisville.
The evening began with a “Social Justice Hour” during which local social justice organizations promoted their missions and activities as a way of getting supporters and volunteers. Hip-hop activist and progressive emcee Jasiri X served as the keynote speaker, discussing the mass incarceration of youth and the work he has done in Pittsburgh as a founding member of the anti-violence group “One Hood.”
The dinner honored John Johnson, the executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, with the Carl and Anne Braden Lifetime Achievement Award. Cathy Hinko, the director of the Metropolitan Housing Coalition, was also recognized for her work on assuring safe and affordable housing in the Louisville community.
After the dinner, the ballroom was transformed into the “Hip Hop vs. Racism – Unity Party.” Guests enjoyed a performance by Jasiri X, as well as by local rap and spoken word talent.
