Indian Summer Camp lifts spirits for kids with cancer
Indian Summer Camp celebrated its 30th anniversary during its annual Summer Camp from July 10-16 for kids with cancer.
Children between the ages of 6-18 who are currently receiving or who have finished treatment attend for free to enjoy arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, sports and other various summer camp activities in a setting that lifts their spirits and gives them memories they will have for a lifetime. Children currently receiving treatment are able to do so thanks to the doctors and nurses who volunteer to run the Med Lodge on the campsite. Nearly half of the camp counselors are former campers, giving them an extra special bond to the campers who make lifelong friends every year.
This year’s theme was Hollywood, seen in the detailed decor throughout the campsite and the decor of the last evening’s big dance. Visitors, including both U of L and UK football and basketball players, come to play with the kids and give them sports memorabilia, serving as one of the highlights of their week; other special guests come to visit and play with the kids, which is one of the most rewarding moments if you ask those who have done so.
Louisville Firefighters attend to spend the week with the kids and show them how to scuba dive in the pool, to have fun and to keep the campers safe. Volunteer opportunities, sponsoring/providing meals for the campers, sponsoring a cabin and other involvement opportunities are available; donations are appreciated and the Camp’s Wish List is on the website for review.
