Big Four Pedestrian Bridge Opens To The Public

| February 8, 2013

Hundreds of Louisvillians turned out on foot – and on wheels – Thursday morning for the public opening of the Big Four pedestrian bridge.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson were among the excited crowd that walked, jogged or biked the approximately mile-long stretch for the first time.

The Louisville Waterfront Development Corporation oversaw the endeavor to transform the former railroad bridge into a pedestrian walkway, a project that began in 2010.

The bridge extends across the Ohio river to Jeffersonville, Ind., where railings block off an area, still under construction, that will eventually become a second entrance ramp to the bridge. The ramp is expected to be completed next spring.
