Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky Pageant

The Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky committee and its partner, Frazier Rehab Institute, held the 16th annual Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky Pageant Oct. 27 at Holiday Inn Louisville East on Hurstbourne Lane. The Voice-Tribune’s Managing Editor Angie Fenton emceed the event.

Instead of a beauty contest, the organization holds the competition each year in order to select an accomplished and articulate spokesperson for millions of disabled Americans. Candidates were judged based on accomplishments, communication and public relation skills, and self perception and projection.

Heather Markham was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky. Markham will travel the state during her reign to spread a message of achievement and advocacy.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk

More than $200,000 was raised for the fight against breast cancer at the American Cancer Society’s 15th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk Oct. 28.

The inspiring event began at Waterfront Park, where members of the community convened to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about the importance of early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund life-saving research and support programs to further the progress against the disease.

Turf Club Halloween Celebration

The Turf Club at Churchill Downs hosted its annual Halloween Celebration Oct. 28.

The family-friendly, afternoon event featured a Sunday Brunch and children’s costume contest.

Raise The Barre

A chic and edgy party called “Raise the Barre” was held Oct. 27 in honor of the Louisville Ballet dancers.

Douglas Riddle and Bruce Simpson converted the warehouse space into a hip party scene that included a night full of dancing and catering provided by Chef Dean Corbett, of Corbett’s: An American Place.

Love An Artist Reception

Larry Shapin and Ladonna Nicolas hosted a cocktail reception themed “Love An Artist,” Oct. 24. The evening was held to teach guests more about the Kentucky School of Art.

Goodwill Industries Volunteer Luncheon

Goodwill Industries held its Volunteer Luncheon Oct. 25 at Hurstbourne Christian Church. The program featured a style show with models sporting outfits purchased at Goodwill.

Attendees browsed the bazaar, which included a sale of baked goods. All proceeds from the event will be used to provide job training through Goodwill Industries.

Dogtoberfest

The Bluegrass Brewing Company in St. Matthews hosted the second annual Dogtoberfest on Oct. 28 to benefit Saving Sunny and the Kentucky Humane Society.

The event included cute canines, dog vendors, music, a costume contest and a silent auction featuring great prizes, including the chance to build your own beer with Brewmaster Jeremy Hunt. The Voice-Tribune’s managing editor, Angie Fenton, emceed, along with her chiweenie, Yoda.

Jack O’Lantern Stroll

Dreams With Wings presented the 12th annual Jack O’Lantern Stroll Oct. 26 at Louisville Slugger Field.

The free festivity featured a glowing path of more than 2,500 beautifully carved jack o’lanterns as well as live music, food, trick-or-treating for kids, craft making, spooky ghost stories and an appearance by Radio Disney. Attendees also enjoyed Louisville’s largest pumpkin pie.

All proceeds from the event benefit Dreams With Wings, a non-profit group offering a comprehensive range of support services for individuals with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities and autism.

Boo La La

Olmsted Parks Conservancy hosted its annual Boo La La Halloween party Oct. 27 at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel.

The soiree included cocktails, dinner, a Pledge for the Parks and dancing with the Endless Summer Band.

Boo La La raises much needed funds to support restoration efforts in all the Frederick Law Olmsted Parks and Parkways.
