Week in the Highlands 2012
A partnership of Highlands neighborhoods and organizations is celebrating a “Week in the Highlands 2012,” Oct. 6 through 14. A Pre-Week Event, HCM Fund Day, will support Highlands Community Ministries, at O’Shea’s Irish Pub, 956 Baxter Ave. The “Week” kicks off at 8 a.m. Oct. 6, with the Highlands Cup 5K Run/Walk, which follows a scenic course down Douglass Boulevard, winding through the historic neighborhood. This event is followed by a pancake breakfast at Douglass Boulevard Christian Church. The Highlands-Douglass Big Rock Jazz & Blues Fest, 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 7, will be held in the Big Rock area of Cherokee Park. The outdoor concert features headliner Don Braden with Todd Hildreth, Jonathan Higgins and Tyrone Wheeler. Admission is free. Empty Bowls, a fund raiser for the HCMs’ Individual and Family Assistance Program combines art and a soup supper, 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at Frazier Hall, Bellarmine University. Soups from area restaurants can be combined with original bowls created by area potters and artists for a $25 donation or $10 for food alone. The Belknap Fall Festival will be Oct. 12 and 13 in the historic Douglass Loop area on Dundee and Harvard Drive. Live music and food will be featured from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening, and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., there will be over 100 exhibitors of juried arts and crafts, live music and strolling entertainers. Admission is free. And the Farmington Harvest Festival, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Farmington Historic Plantation, 3033 Bardstown Rd., features live music, tasty food, farmers and artists markets, battle reenactments, a petting zoo, pony rides and free tours of the historic 1816 mansion. Admission is $5 per vehicle and per family for walkers and bike riders. All event details can be found at www.WeekintheHighlands.org.
