Better nutrition is the focus of a new class aimed at people diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The first class will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 22 at Baptist Hospital East, 4000 Kresge Way. Classes will be conducted monthly in 2013. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar) of A1C levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. A registered nurse and a dietitian will teach the class, which will also address exercise and ways to monitor your progress. Studies have shown that people with pre-diabetes who lose weight and increase their physical activity can prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes. In some cases, their blood glucose can return to normal. For information or to register for the pre-diabetes class – or any other diabetes class offered by Baptist – call 502.897.8831.
