pre-diabetes class

Better nutrition is the focus of a new class aimed at people diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The next class will be from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 at Baptist Health Louisville, 4000 Kresge Way. Classes will be conducted monthly in 2013.

Prediabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar) or A1C levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

A registered nurse and a dietitian will teach the class, which will also address exercise and ways to monitor your progress.
Studies have shown that people with prediabetes who lose weight and increase their physical activity can prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes. In some cases, their blood glucose can return to normal.
An estimated 79 million Americans over age 20 have prediabetes.
Baptist Health Louisville’s Diabetes Management Program includes two classes for those newly diagnosed with diabetes, plus a more in-depth program for those diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Baptist Health and the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center have a pre-diabetes medical fitness program dubbed NEED – Nutrition, Exercise and Education to Deter Diabetes. Physician referral is required to join.
