Filson Historical Society Lecture
“Battle Hymns: The Power and Popularity of Music in the Civil War” will be held at The Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. Third St., on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. Drawing on an array of published and archival sources, Christian McWhirter will discuss the myriad ways music influenced popular culture in the years surrounding the war, as well as discuss its deep resonance for both whites and blacks, South and North. Though published songs of the time have long been catalogued and appreciated, McWhirter is the first to explore what Americans actually said and did with these pieces. McWhirter is an assistant editor for the Papers of Abraham Lincoln at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. There is no charge to attend this event, and reservations are suggested. For reservations or information call 502.635.5083 or visit www.filsonhistorical.org.
