Olivia Henken ‘riding’ to stardom

| April 6, 2011

Olivia Henken

One of my favorite up ‘n’ coming performers is country crooner Olivia Henken, who has performed in several venues around town, including the KFC Yum! Center, Fourth Street Live and at Churchill Downs.

The talented Louisville gal recently finished recording her debut album in Nashville, and it’s already getting good reviews, but that’s no surprise. Olivia has the chops and the personality that makes country fans fall head over heels. You’re invited to celebrate the release of “The Ride” from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Saddle Ridge inside Fourth Street Live.

You can also catch Olivia at the Derby Festival’s Waterfront Park Thunder Chow Wagon beginning at 2 p.m. April 16.

Betsey Buzz

Betsey Johnson recently talked to Teen Vogue about attending her prom at Terryville High School in Connecticut back in 1958. The famed fashion designer was crowned queen that night, which she joked probably only happened because she was on the prom committee.

So what did Ms. Johnson don on the momentous occasion? “I wore hoops and petticoats to make sure my princess gown stuck straight out – it had to be big, big, beyond bouffant big!”

Eat • Play • Live

Save the date for The Voice-Tribune’s next Third Thursday After-Work Party at Napa River Grill in Westport Village. Join us – and our Networking Sponsor Northwestern Mutual – for our monthly event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 21.

Holy Happiness

I love a leisurely night out with friends – or a special someone – at one of the area’s locally-owned venues, particularly now that the weather almost demands we head outdoors. Two of my favorites: Holy Grale, 1034 Bardstown Road, and Hammerheads, 921 Swan St.

If you go – and you should – try the chorizo tacos at Holy Grale and the PBLT (which I call “heaven in a sandwich”) at Hammerheads.

Winning Looks

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to RSVP for CaloSpa’s April 14 “Winning Looks” Derby event, sponsored by the Private Client Reserve of U.S. Bank. The evening is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the center and will feature fashions, libations and hors d’oeuvres, and plenty of information about CaloSpa’s Trifecta and Exacta pre-Derby facial treatments. RSVP by calling 502.899.9982 or go to www.calospa.com/winninglooks.

Derby with Macy’s

Fashionista Todd Calvert and I will emcee a Derby fashion show at Macy’s in the Oxmoor Center at noon on April 13, featuring Derby wear, spring makeup, music and light refreshments. The Voice-Tribune crew will be there, too, with giveaways and information about our upcoming Brunch with Betsey Johnson, presented by Chambord.
