The season when Louisville shines

In theory, we all should be rejuvenated after returning from a relaxing spring break trip. Hopefully warmer temperatures will return to the Derby City, and we can begin to enjoy the splendor and gorgeous color of spring foliage.

But this is the time of year when Louisvillians and local businesses run on adrenaline for the next four weeks in preparation for the Kentucky Derby. Each year thousands make their way to Louisville for the sexiest, most stylish and most historic horse race in the country. Hotels are sold-out, restaurants are bursting at the seams and every nail technician, hair stylist and boutique owner is working overtime. With countless events and galas to attend, there’s not enough room on our calendars to cram in one more festivity.

Thunder Over Louisville, the largest fireworks show in the world and the opening event for the Derby Festival, leads us to the Run for the Roses. It’s hard to imagine the time and effort that goes into planning an event like the Kentucky Derby, even though the race lasts just two minutes.

But our city manages to capture the world’s attention every year. Horses, hats, mint juleps and glamorous people are all outsiders know about the Derby, but it’s the event that everyone ought to check off his or her bucket list.

It’s a highly contagious event for first-time attendees. What’s not to fall in love with when the lights of Louisville are lit for this annual weekend? The Derby is all about having the time of your life and enjoying it with good friends and meeting new friends along the way. As the last thoroughbred gallops past the finish line in the 137th running of the Derby, I will begin to anticipate what next year’s Derby will bring.
