This week we sat down and talked with some of the boutiques that will be featured in the fashion show at The Voice-Tribune’s Best Dressed of Louisville Presented by Churchill Downs.

What do you think it takes to be considered “Best Dressed”?
Someone who walks in a room, and no matter what is always confident. Someone who is willing to try new things and step outside the box.
What are some of the hottest designers right now?
DVF, ALC, Rachel Zoe, Morine Conte Marant.
Becca Pratte, Manager of Boutique Serendipity
What is some of the best styling advice you would offer a customer?
Some of the best styling advice I ever received, and pass on freely, is to wear things in an unexpected way. Wear a necklace as a belt. Wear a scarf as a head wrap. Use vintage earrings as brooches. Cuff your jeans when you think you shouldn’t. Put flats on when you think you should wear heels. Use two skinny belts to cinch your waist instead of one thick belt. It’s the unexpected details which will leave people completely envious of your style.
Which summer trends are the most popular among your customers?
I was more than happy to welcome back the sheer trend from last summer. It’s seriously the perfect way to layer during the summer and add interest and dimension to your outfits without adding too much heat. This can mean a gauzy lightweight sweater or a sheer blouse. Our customers can’t get enough of this trend! Just throw on a cami or tank – add a sheer layer on top, and you’re out the door.
Color blocking was also exciting to see for this summer. Pairing color with color can be daunting, but it creates an intense amount of visual interest. Just think of it as wearing the color wheel. Choose two colors which go well together (i.e. purple and emerald) and boldly incorporate them into your outfit.

How do you stay fashion-forward in your business?
I definitely look for things that are interesting and edgy. Out motto is “Simply Sophisticated Edge.” We don’t want people to find things in our store that they’d find in other stores.
We try to stay with young, up-and-coming, contemporary designers like Aryn K, The Black Collection, Byron Lars Beauty Mark, Black Halo and Important Culture.
What are trendiest colors of the season?
I would definitely say there’s a big purple and orange trend right now. People have actually color-blocked the two together, which is really interesting. The little white dress is also very in these days. African-looking stuff is also really cool. I’m actually from Sierra Leone, so I love prints!
