Nothing compares to the energy and excitement the Kentucky Derby brings to our city. It’s a time when Louisvillians are racing around to take in as many of the festivities as possible. Since the actual race is so short, much of the excitement surrounding the Derby comes from the traditions and parties that lead up to it.

Churchill Downs continues to stay true to its rich history in horse racing by bringing us the finest the industry has to offer. In addition, it has added new and innovative events that give customers more reasons to make the racetrack their stomping grounds for entertainment.

For the first time, the Spring Meet will open with night racing on April 30. Racing under the lights is an incredible experience and something you shouldn’t miss. The plan for opening night is to have many of the same chic elements as in prior night racing events. Famed DJ Clinton Sparks will provide entertainment in the paddock beginning at 9 p.m.

Aside from being one of the oldest thoroughbred horse races in the United States, there are several things the Derby is famous for: hats, mint juleps and the most fashionable people who make their way into the most historic racetrack in the world. Women travel from all corners of the world to flaunt their one-of-a-kind hats while sipping the iconic beverage.

Whether you choose to endure the infield or somehow land on Millionaires Row, the Kentucky Derby is a bucket list priority. It’s a unique experience and something you will always remember. Each year as the handsome horses begin to make their way onto the track and “My Old Kentucky Home” is heard throughout the stands, I look around and realize that I am in the presence of one of the greatest sporting events in the world. I’m proud to be a Kentuckian, and this sends chills down my spine.

While out and about, don’t forget and take notice of the women, men and couples that should be on the list for The Voice-Tribune’s Best Dress of Louisville Presented by Churchill Downs. Make your nominations April 28 through May 19 at www.voice-tribune.com.

Let’s keep in mind the reason we work so diligently to make sure Best Dressed remains successful. The benefiting charity again this year is Dress for Success.

This not-for-profit organization helps women re-enter the workplace not only by dressing them, but giving them the confidence to remain self-sufficient.
