Picking a winner for the Breeders’ Cup races for most of us proved to be a daunting task. But, living in a horse fan-based community it takes a lot more than not cashing a ticket to keep us away from Churchill Downs. On a beautiful fall afternoon with seasonably warm temperatures, the combination was enough to draw record crowds for the two-day World Championships of horse racing.

Since the royal nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, we have witnessed one of the hottest fashion trends emerge. Who knew the fascination with fascinators would make such a splash in the U.S. But, the rich history of female fashion often seen at the historical Churchill Downs racetrack is not a product of modern times: rather a fashion statement that has transformed with time.

So, when The Voice-Tribune partnered with Breeders’ Cup to organize the first Fascinator & Fedora Friday contest, the response from the community and people visiting from all over the world was overwhelming. Over 200 hundred contestants lined the Aristides Garden and walked the purple carpet to compete for the $5,000 cash prize in hopes of being chosen for sporting the most stylish headdress.

Whether contestants took the time to create and add their own individual style to each fascinator or fedora or purchase one from their favorite distinguished hat designer, everyone who adorned a fascinator and fedora was a winner in our eyes.
