A glimpse at what’s hot

| July 27, 2011

This week I talked with two more of our fabulous Best Dressed of Louisville sponsors.
They shared insights on the latest beauty trends and what’s going to be hot for fall.

Kelli Campbell, owner of Joseph’s Salon and Spa

Joseph’s is a full-service salon and spa in a competitive market. What sets Joseph’s apart from its competition?
Joseph’s Salon and Spa is an Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa. We see ourselves as a beauty industry trendsetter in the art of hair styling and coloring, makeup, skin care and spa services. We use only the professional brand of plant-based products of Aveda. Joseph’s beauty professionals are unique in the industry for their pursuit of higher art: helping make their clients not only look beautiful, but feel beautiful. We strive to bring out the beauty in our clients through genuine care.

What are some of the latest trends in hairstyles and treatments that we can expect to see this year?
Retro ’60s and ’70s styles are in. Bobs with bangs with effortless appeal of natural curl is very reflective of the ’70s bogeyman look. The pixie of the ’60s is making its way back with celebrity Emma Watson sporting it. This look is modern and simply sassy, reflective of the Mia Farrow look of the ’60s.

Hair color is going strong and dramatic – white blondes, intense redheads. The natural effortless bob or pixie with a strong color is where it is at. We use the plant-based color of Aveda that makes even the vibrant colors feel natural.

Braids are an easy way to add some dimension to your long hair. Half braids and top-knot braids are a modern way to pull hair up.

The feathers have it! Dainty and delicate or bright and exotic, feather extensions are hot. Joseph’s Salon carries Feather Locks. They are $20 for one, and this includes installation. It is $10 for each additional. They last up to six weeks, and you can wash and curl them. The feathers last forever, but you may just have to re-install after six weeks. We are seeing young and old take on this trend.

As far as spa trends go, wellness is the theme. Like exercise and eating well, a great massage should be a part of your heath rituals.

For nails, No Chip is a great new gel polish that lasts up to two weeks and is gentler to the nail than acrylic or gel extensions. We charge $50 for a full manicure and Shellac nail polish

Chrissie Richardson and Sandy Muench, co-owners of Sunny Daize

What are some easy and cost-effective ways to update your wardrobe?Use the “high/low” dressing formula:  Pair a fashionable, high-end piece with more affordable labels. Make sure the “statement piece” is versatile and timeless, then add less expensive accessories, such as shoes, jewelry and a handbag.
• Thin and fine belts are a huge trend. Use one, or even two, around knits, blazers, coats and even fur, to add color and accentuate the body.
• Layer your jewelry! Bracelets, necklaces and brooches can be worn in multiples to add an updated look.

What styles can we expect to see in this year’s Best Dressed fashion show?
Faux fur and fur detail, on clothing and even shoes is great for fall. Look for “mod squad” style – 1960s and ’70s with shift dresses, tunic tops and chunky sweaters. Skirts and dresses will be longer in length – from midi to maxi – often with front or side slits.

Fabrics with sheen (liquid metallics), sequins, lace or leather in patterns like polka dots and graphic prints and geometric patterns will be popular. Colors range from winter whites and creams to tomato red, caramel and deep violet. Shoes range from platforms and wedges to chunky heels and spikes. Of course, boots (high and low) are always a great accessory. Of course, whatever Douglas Riddle decides to showcase, we will love!
