Stan’s celebrating Mardi Gras one last time

Happy Mardi Gras!

I had a preview of THE BEST Fat Tuesday celebration at Stan’s Fish Sandwich last week where Lelia Gentle, owner, and the Rev. Diane Walker, superstar event planner, gave me a carte blanche lunch and let me take pictures of them (and me – they needed a model for the purple velvet King’s Crown and I was wearing a purple suit with gold shoes -,  in Mardi Gras colors.)

I ordered a catfish sandwich and told them I needed something else for lunch, thinking I hadn’t had a real catfish dinner since I left home in Mississippi years ago.

They said OK and brought me gorgeous clam chowder, a crab cake fit for a king and fried oysters “just in case!”

The catfish came crisp with cornmeal coating. One bite and I was back at Moon Lake near Oxford where Ole Miss students caught catfish to fry up for Nobel Prize author William Faulkner. Who was known to them as Mr. Bill and told them ghost stories by moon light around their campfire. I closed my eyes and dreamed, which made Lelia and Diane think I didn’t like it!

“Heavenly,” I said.

“Where did this come from?” I asked.

“A lake in the Mississippi Delta,” she said.

Mardi Gras Celebration
As you know Stan’s will be closing for good on May 29 after 24 wonderful years. So this year’s Fat Tuesday celebration at the restaurant on Tuesday, March 8, will be better than ever.

The Gentle children, who all grew up working in the business, will be arriving from all over – New York, Sacramento and New Mexico – to join in on the celebration!

In addition to the traditional menu of steamed shrimp, gumbo over rice and King’s Cake, there will be two 6-feet po’ boy sandwiches served – one at noon and the other at 6 p.m. The sandwich will be presented in the dining room and served complimentary to patrons.

There will also be free samples of seafood gumbo.

The King’s Cake will be 5-feet square, and everybody will get a free piece. If you find the “baby” in the cake, you will be rewarded with a Stan’s “The End is Here – Celebrating 24 years” T-shirt.

Other prizes will be awarded during the day. Go early – there will be a line.

Let the Good times roll!
If you’re looking to throw your own party this year, Lelia will be teaching a Mardi Gras cooking class, “Adventure to New Orleans” at the neighboring Cooking at the Cottage kitchen shop in the Vogue courtyard on Wednesday, March 7.

The menu for the class will include: Creole oyster po’ boy,,  seafood gumbo, shrimp etoufee, savory red beans and rice with carmelized pecans and bananas foster for dessert.
