My dear friend Owsley Brown III hosted the first annual Kentucky School of Art Derby Party and Student Art Show last month.

The art show was the product of the first year’s work by Kentucky School of Art students led by Dean, Churchill Davenport. I have loved Churchill Davenport, his mother and his family for many years. I was thrilled when Churchill moved to Louisville two years ago to start an art school. Art is my second love. How exciting that Churchill and his friend Owsley Brown III hosted a party for the students in the former home of Mary Alice Hadley, one of Kentucky’s most celebrated artists.

Susan Davenport was my best friend; I loved her painting. Churchill inherited her talent for painting and for teaching and I’m thrilled to be part of it.

During the evening’s events, recognitions awards were given to Skylar Smith, faculty, Kasey Maier, Administrative Director and of course, Owsley Brown III. All three were awarded special pieces of Hadley Pottery for their ongoing commitment and hard work.

Owsley’s intention was for this first annual event to be a “friend-raising” party for the Kentucky School of Art, and it was a huge success with over 250 attendees. The party will be an annual event. I’ll see you all on Tuesday, May 1, 2012!
