Charter Collectors select new painting

| December 2, 2010

The most beautiful and heavenly dinner parties have been given in your honor for 27 years by The Charter Collectors of the J.B. Speed Art Museum, including the latest one on Saturday, Nov. 20.

I’m writing this thank you note to them from you and me for the millions of dollars the Collectors have contributed to give us the permanent joy of rare art.

About 80 of the 136 current Charter Collectors were on hand for the glamorous black tie dinner at 7 p.m. at the museum.

After cocktails, the Collectors went into the gold theater where Ruth Cloudman presented two paintings for voting:
Jean-honore Fragonard (French, 1732-1806), painted “The Watering Place (L’abreuvoir), about 1763-1765. Oil on canvas. Price: $1.1 million.

And, the winning painting was by Alfred Sisley (French, 1839-1899) “Hilly Path, Ville d’Avray” (Chemin montant a ville d’Avray), 1879. Oil on canvas. Price: $1.2 million.

Lovely Dinner

Centerpieces were fall flowers by Margaret Kulp, who also did,  the huge arrangement in the foyer with,  J.D. Myles.

The Ray Johnson Trio played during the dinner catered by Kathy Cary of Lilly’s.

The menu included: Kentucky Bibb lettuce salad with figs, capriole sophia cheese, almonds and champagne vinaigrette; beef tenderloin filet; bourbon smoked shiitake mushrooms; roasted fingerling potatoes; veal jus; and for dessert, apple tart with caramel sauce.
