St. Francis ready for Imagine Art Auction

Imagine 2011, the art gala fundraiser for St. Francis High School, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, at The Gillespie on Market Street. For the 15th year, this event will raise scholarship funds for the private, independent, non-denominational school.

The featured item is a photograph by Daniel Melo titled “In Everlasting.” In addition to the juried art pieces, Imagine 2011 guests may bid on art created for the show by St. Francis High School alumni including Naomi Stuecker, Paul Harshaw, Julia Naiditch, Steve Bartlett and Mark Dorf.

A special portrait of student Noor Ambure is being painted for Imagine 2011 by St. Francis artist-in-residence, Gaela Erwin.

All-Star Dinner

It seems as though everyone is eating out this week.

Six renowned local chefs are cooking a dinner to support job training for low-income and homeless citizens by presenting Chefs For Hope, a six-course dinner at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5. The event is being hosted by chef Anoosh Shariat at Park Place on Main at Slugger Field.

Chefs for Hope is a benefit for the Salvation Army’s Culinary Training Program, an initiative led by chef Josh Arnold that provides candidates with training to prepare them for jobs in professional kitchens.

Other participating chefs are Kathy Cary, Dean Corbett, Jim Gerhardt, Peng Looi and Daniel Stage.

Since August of 2005, the Salvation Army Culinary Program has trained more than 70 homeless and low-income citizens to enter the workforce in the restaurant and hospitality industries. Chef Arnold conducts classes at the Center of Hope, where he is also responsible for feeding 400 people daily, developing relationships with local farmers and program suppliers, catering and tending the center’s on-site gardens that supply much of their herbs and produce. He also is creating the appetizer course for the dinner.

Memorial Dinner

Seven local chefs will join forces for a culinary event in memory of one of their own. On Friday, Feb. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 26, Napa River Grill will host a five-course chef collaboration dinner with wine pairings in memory of the restaurant’s sous chef Kenneth Black. Black was killed in an auto accident in April of 2010, just five days short of his 25th birthday.

“A Culinary Tribute Benefiting the Kenneth Black Memorial Scholarship Fund” will be held at the Westport Village location of Wild Eggs, and all proceeds will be donated to a scholarship fund at Sullivan University named in Black’s honor.

Tickets are $125 per person including tax (gratuity is appreciated) and can be purchased by calling (502) 423-5784. Reservations are required.

The star-studded cast of chefs includes chef Anthony Lamas, chef Kathy Cary, chef John Castro, chef John Varanese, chef John Plymale and chef Michelle Childers. Each chef will be responsible for a specific course showcasing their individual areas of expertise and cuisine.

Chef David Malthaner, executive chef of Napa River Grill, will oversee the production of the dinner.
